Summary

Description
English: As seen during the 2022 Tulip Festival, the newest feature in Albany, New York's Washington Park is the so-called Secret Garden (a misnomer; its opening was well publicized), which was unveiled earlier in the year to celebrate the return of in-person festivities to the city's Tulip Festival after two years of virtuality during the COVID-19 pandemic. The garden also honors the 75th anniversary of the Aid Campaign for Nijmegen, a relief operation spearheaded by U.S. General James M. Gavin through which Albany residents donated an estimated 300 tons of supplies to their Dutch sister city to help rebuild after the devastation of the Second World War. Queen Wilhelmina's grateful gift in return - a royal proclamation designating the "Orange Wonder" tulip as Albany's official flower - was the inspiration behind the inauguration of the first Tulip Festival in 1949.
