Cotton spinning by hand is rapidly dying out ; it is only carriedon in some remote villages; on my journey I saw hand spinningin a few villages of Burma, Madras, and the North-western FrontierProvince. The yarn produced by the hand wheel is very Uneven, coarse, and very much dearer than machine-spun yarn. The yarn spunby the cotton mills in India is principally coarse, 8s- to 12s- for usein the hand loom. Hand weaving is, next to agriculture, the industrywhich employs most people in India. It is maintained by many thatthis industry is fast making room for the power loom, but I am in-clined to think that, as regards coarse goods, the hand loom has norival. In the Indian Trade Journal (Aug. 21, 1913) the averageyearly production of hand-loom cloth was stated tobe278,742,4841bs.from 1910/1912, whilst 248,418,423lbs. was given as the average forthe years 1896/99. He attends to the household duties, to field duties, and inmany cases the owner of a loom weaves only, as it were, to fill up leisurehours, just as so much knitting is done in Europe. There is no exciseduty payable on cloth produced by hand looms, whilst cloth producedby power looms pays 3J per cent, on the value. The Indian powerlooms contribute yearly slightly over £3 per loom, accord
