Description
The duchesse de Berry (1798–1870), by birth a princess of Naples, was the widowed mother of the eventual heir to the French throne. Her portrait suggests the exaltation of a young woman who identified with the heroines of Sir Walter Scott. The portraitist staged her against a threatening sky, her scarf swept away by the wind.
