Summary

Description
English: This file is used to explain Wheeling, (West) Virginia's transportation situation in the 1840s. The railroad industry was still in its infancy, and not much railroad line (in red on map) existed west of the Appalachian Mountains. Wheeling (circled in blue) had a westward transportation advantage because it was on the Ohio River. (The Ohio and Mississippi rivers have been highlighted in sky blue.)
