| Description |
Silverton is a former silver mining camp which lies north of Durango, in south-west Colorado. As well as silver, gold has also been mined here. It lies at 9,318 feet (2,836 m) above sea level and is on the famous Million Dollar Highway (Highway 550). The origin of the name Million Dollar Highway is not certain but alternatives include that it cost a million dollars a mile to build in the 1920s, or alternately that the rubble used as a base for the road contains a million dollars in gold ore. There are no working mines at Silverton any more but many tourists visit all year round with the mountain scenery being a big draw at any time together with winter sports when in season.The town is the terminus of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad which runs steam trains alongside the Animas River. Silverton is well worth a visit, whether visitors come by train or car, with many buildings and features little changed for more than a century. My picture was taken in the early Fall (Autumn) and the trees were just starting to change color (colour!). |
