Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 23:04 on 3 June 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"[edit]

  • Lionel Dyck should be returned to Colonel Dyck as that was the name it was nominated and promoted as with the !support votes agreeing it was the commonname we should use. The C of E God Save the King! (talk) 05:34, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was changed with the edit summary typically use page titile (presumably the WP:COMMONNAME), which is fair enough. The C of E, I suggest you get a move request underway. Schwede66 18:53, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agreed nothing of the sort and tried to make that pretty clear. InedibleHulk (talk) 19:45, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • For Champions League, can we swap and put Real Madrid in the first place as men's football is arguably more watched worldwide (without prejudice to women)? Brandmeistertalk 16:17, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that should matter (and I imagine it's precisely because of that reason that the women's one was listed first). That being said, because the men's final occurred more recently (and is the rationale for being assigned a June 1 date), I feel it should be listed first. Looking at ITN/C, I'm not sure why the women's one was listed first in the blurb; it wasn't even part of the original nomination. -- tariqabjotu 16:59, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's fine as is. Let it stay this way for a while, and we can always swap them tomorrow or something.  — Amakuru (talk) 17:16, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • "In association football, Barcelona win the women's Champions League and Real Madrid win the men's Champions League." [sic]
What it should say: In association football, Barcelona wins the women's Champions League and Real Madrid wins the men's Champions League.
MrPersonHumanGuy (talk) 18:04, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MrPersonHumanGuy: You're correct only in some parts of the English-speaking world. See MOS:PLURAL. Bazza 7 (talk) 18:24, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What is this, anyway? Have people completely forgotten MOS:SEAOFBLUE? This is a chronic condition on the MP, but this one is just obscene. Cremastra (talk) 20:57, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • There are three unpictured and potentially picturable people still not getting pictured, despite winning newsworthy things recently. InedibleHulk (talk) 19:41, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Done OK, I think I may have addressed most of the issues above - bypassing the win vs wins debate, SEAOFBLUE, and picture choice... take a look at the updated template. The only thing I haven't yet done is list the men's final first. I think let's give the women's event 24 hours in the spotlight first, then we can flip the ordering and also show the pic from the men's event tomorrow. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 21:47, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I like how it looks like she's reading the blurb. All photos should do that, unless it's impractical. Focus on the content, not the contributors. InedibleHulk (talk) 22:01, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
