Untitled[edit]

Okay, I've just spent the last couple of days adding several dozen films into this category. Don't know if that makes in "populated" now or not, but for the record here it the criteria used to add such films:

  • Pornographic films that have achieved a certain status by logevity, as well as containing something like a plot.
  • Cult films that have strong and/or graphic sexual content.
  • Mainstream films with a strong sexual content/themes.

What I have not included (at least not knowingly) are films whose sexual content were essentially violent. My reasoning was that for most audience members this is not so much "erotic" as "pornographic." IMO erotica is supposed to arouse, but it is also supposed to fullfill the purposes of any other kind of film. An erotic horror film is supposed to frighten. An erotic drama is supposed to move. An erotic comedy should make one laugh. Or at least they should be clearly attempting to do this. To be sure, it is perfectly possible IMO for a film to be both. Whether the editors agrees with me or not remains to be seen. Un-clicking my soapbox icon now...<g> Zahir13 23:59, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't want to criticise but a couple of films you've put into this category are really odd choices. Firstly Baise-moi, a film about rape and the murder. This doesn't seem to fit into your philosophy of what is erotic. The thing is, there will be a lot of people who will find it erotic but there will be people who will find something erotic in every film. Secondly, Pink Flamingos, a comedy that is deliberately in bad taste the only potentially erotic moment is where a mother (who is played by a man) performs fellatio on her son. This is meant to shock not titilate. Another is The Idiots, despite graphic sex, I think most people would find it difficult to find anything erotic about it in the context of the story. I guess what this boils down to is whether this is a viable category, it depends to some extent on what individuals find erotic, it could end up as a dumping ground for any film that has "male nudity" or "female nudity" as a tag on IMDB, is it possible to tighten its criteria so it's clear what belongs without making it a duplicate of Category:Mainstream films with explicit sex?
