Opposed speedy move request[edit]

  • Oppose: the purpose of this category and all other "Former Soviet military air bases in..." categories was to allow for easy identification of former Soviet air bases in the eastern bloc. The proposed renaming to "Airbases in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic" is less clear. In relation to the wording "military air bases" this followed from the earlier category of "Former Soviet military bases in ..." I agree that an air base is by definition military, but obviously air bases are a subcategory of military bases. Mztourist (talk) 03:23, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The only thing one has to know is that Kazakhstan was the former Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. That's pretty much starter knowledge for people dealing with this topic. *Every* airbase in the former Soviet Union is a former Soviet Air Forces or PVO base. There has not be a single new construction of any airbase in the fSU since 1991, to my knowledge (and Tim Vasquez seemed to believe the same thing). There's never been any money. "Former Soviet military air base in [country]" requires no "starter" knowledge, Users might not know whether the "[country] Soviet Socialist Republic" is the current country or a former name. Also it will mean that there won't be a division between former SSRs and other eastern bloc countries. Mztourist (talk) 09:50, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But we divide USAF bases by state inside the US, and very definitely countries outside!! Really I think you're worrying about deliniations which don't exist. Buckshot06 (talk) 19:47, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's not a valid comparison. The USAF continues to exist unlike the Soviet Air Forces. To find former USAF air bases you need to locate the List of former United States Air Force installations and then find the base on the list. If you happen to find a former USAF base like Wheelus Air Base for example, it is categorised as Installations of the United States Air Force. I want a quick and easy way to find former Soviet Air Bases in a particular country which is what the existing category achieves. Mztourist (talk) 03:17, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ignore the "former" distinction. It's thoroughly unhelpful here and it's confusing you. Use the categories as they are set up, which treats them as they were at the time. Look at the List of Soviet Air Force bases, helpfully overhauled by Gavbadger, which is now sortable by republic (SSR), or categories inside either Category:Soviet Air Force or Category:Military installations of the Soviet Union.
Even the specific example you use is *not* categorized as a "former" USAF base, it's in the USAF installations category, not former installations. Buckshot06 (talk) 01:17, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Don't tell me that something confuses me. The existing category groups the bases conveniently by country without the need to find another page like List of Soviet Air Force bases and then sort by SSR to then find the bases in a particular country. I gave Wheelus as an example of exactly this issue, there the categories don't even make it clear that its no longer a USAF base. Mztourist (talk) 11:24, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
