Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhara (BJB) High School traces its roots back to a humble beginning in 1842, when the British established a Primary school in Khorda. Over the years, this institution evolved into a Middle Vernacular School in 1845 and then a Middle English School in 1858. Recognizing the importance of education in Khorda, the then Sub Divisional Officer Macpherson led efforts to elevate the school to a High English School. Under Macpherson's guidance, a Preparatory Committee was formed, including notable figures like Maulabi Dadar Box, Krushna Chandra Samantarai, Radha Krushna Pattanaik, Kanungo Chintamani Pattanaik, and Sri Digamber Srichandan. Sri Digamber Srichandan, in particular, played a pivotal role in fundraising by appealing to local authorities and donating personally, setting an example for others. Rai Bahadur Radhanath Rai, the Inspector of Schools of Orissa, granted recognition to Khorda High English School. Sri Madhab Chandra Mishra BA became its first Headmaster. Initially, the school operated in three thatched rooms near the Police Station until 1921 when Sri Chintamani Pattanaik contributed funds for additional rooms. The school's growth continued with the proposal and approval for a permanent building on government land in 1917. Construction commenced in 1919 with support from the Bihar-Orissa Government. The foundation was laid by M J F Guning ICS, and the school moved into its new premises after several fire incidents. The inauguration of the new building by Acting Governor M Macpherson marked a new chapter for BJB High School. Over time, the school expanded with the construction of hostel facilities and other amenities. In 1950, it was renamed after Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhara Mohapatra Bhamarabar Rai, a prominent figure in the Paika Rebellion of 1817. BJB High School has a rich legacy of producing outstanding students who excelled in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. Many alumni have made significant contributions to various fields, becoming leaders, scientists, engineers, doctors, artists, and more. Today, BJB High School stands as an iconic institution with modern facilities such as smart classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, and a thriving eco-friendly environment. Its impressive red stone structure, heritage hall, and dedication to academic excellence continue to inspire generations of students.
