The Beltway Bowl is the name given to a geographic rivalry between two NFL teams named the Washington Commanders and Baltimore Ravens. Both teams locations are in the same metropolitan area, however they compete in separate conferences. This rivalry represents the opposition that other Baltimore and D.C. teams have due to them being in the same area, like the Beltway Series of the MLB between the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles.
The first meeting of these two teams occurred in 1997, half a decade after the Redskins, now the Commanders, have moved from Massachusetts to Washington. The Baltimore Ravens have just come off of a tough loss versus the Miami Dolphins decided by only 11 points.[1] Luckily for Baltimore, they hastily took a 14–7 lead at the half. Matt Stover and the Ravens sprung for a field goal in the middle third quarter of the game to extend the lead by 10. All Washington needed was a touchdown and field goal for the tie. Frerotte completed a pass to Brian Mitchell which gave the Redskins another 6 points on the board. The extra point kick sailed through the crossbars to cut the Ravens' lead down to 3. The score was noted 17–14. Matt Stover kicked a successful field goal for Baltimore to potentially put the game out of reach and make it 20–14. The Redskins settled for a late field goal, however, it was too late. Ravens evened out the teams' record to 4-4 and sealed a victory for the first time they played the Redskins. 20–17, the final score.
