"Big Bowl Thick Noodle" is a Mandarin rap single by Canadian-Chinese singer and actor Kris Wu, created and performed based on a meme of the same name. The song combines rap with traditional Chinese music elements, integrating both Eastern and Western musical influences.

Background and procedure[edit]

{{Cquotes}}On June 30, 2017, Hunan TV broadcast the eighth episode of the variety show "The 72nd Floor," featuring Kris Wu as a guest. In the episode, Wu participated in a challenge at a noodle shop in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China, where he sang while making noodles, with the customers acting as judges. During this episode, Kris Wu performed an impromptu rap in Shaanxi dialect.

After watching a video of the show, a university student named Diesi created a freestyle diss track titled "Long, Wide, Big, and Round," using the video as material. Later, a Bilibili uploader named Bullet Trajectory obtained permission to upload the song to Bilibili, which made the video popular and led to many parodic works themed around "Big Bowl Thick Noodle." Initially, Kris Wu was displeased with the netizens' behavior. In 2019, Wu decided to expand his impromptu rap from the show into a full song and invited Li Caisong, Liao Zhengxing, and the Wei Si music team to collaborate on the composition.

On April 19, 2019, Kris Wu officially released "Big Bowl Thick Noodle." On May 11, during the Beijing stop of his "Heaven and Earth East and West ALIVE TOUR Kris Wu 2019 Concert Tour," he performed this song live for the first time and explained that the song conveys a theme of tolerance and open-mindedness.

After 2020, "Big Bowl Thick Noodle" was featured in various programs, including online Spring Festival Galas broadcast by several TV stations such as China Central Television and Beijing Radio & Television.

impact[edit]

In response to Kris Wu using a song to self-deprecate and address internet memes, some netizens expressed appreciation for his approach. They contrasted his behavior with that of Cai Xukun, who sent a legal notice to Bilibili video creators parodying his basketball video, and with the more tolerant attitudes towards meme videos shown by public figures like Zhang Zhaozhong and Ge Ping. Additionally, many netizens apologized to Kris Wu through video comments, saying "Sorry, Kris Wu."

After the song "Big Bowl Thick Noodle" became popular, merchants on Taobao started selling T-shirts, bowls, and other items featuring elements related to the song. Additionally, some listeners went to noodle shops to eat wide noodles after hearing the song.

In August 2021, following allegations of rape against Kris Wu, his personal music works, including "Big Bowl Thick Noodle," were removed from music platforms in mainland China. Additionally, some netizens sarcastically changed the song title "Big Bowl Thick Noodle" to "Big Bowl Prison Meal" to mock his previous statement on his personal Weibo account, where he said, "If I ever engage in such behavior, rest assured, I will go to jail myself!"
