The Hermandad de la Sagrada Eucaristía is a cœtus fidelium, or lay confraternity of Catholics attached to the traditional Romano-Monastic Rite based in the Diocese of Parañaque in the Philippines. It was founded in 2016 by young students from St. Andrew's School who were eager to offer the traditional Mass under the stipulations of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum. Since then, it has expanded to include regular Sunday Masses, devotional practices, and liturgies that incorporate the traditions, feast days, and indults proper to the Philippine islands.

History[edit]

Foundation[edit]

The Hemandad de la Sagrada Eucaristía was founded at the rectory of the Cathedral Parish of Saint Andrew on the 8th of September in 2016 by senior high school students of Saint Andrew's School as a club within that school located in La Huerta, Parañaque City, and it remained so from 2016 until May 2018, when most of its members graduated.

Later history[edit]

The Hermandad has seen multiple changes in its venue, from transferring from St. Andrew's to San Beda College Alabang, where it stayed until 2023. For some time later, it had conducted Masses in St. James the Great Parish, Muntinlupa City [1] prior to moving into the Santuario de San Ezekiel Moreno in Las Piñas City, an oratory under the jurisdiction of the Bamboo Organ Church in 2024. Its transfer to the shrine was based on the permission of the Bishop of Parañaque, Most Rev. Jesse E. Mercado, D.D.

With the release of Traditionis Custodes, the Hermandad adhered to the guidelines by following the decree of the bishop of Parañaque in the celebration of Masses in the diocese. By working within the guidelines, it kept submission to the authority of the local Ordinary and maintained communion with the universal church.

The use of its social media page allowed the Hermandad to grow and promote its activities, which led to an increase in the attendance of its congregation. Most of its attendees are from cities within the Diocese of Parañaque (Parañaque, Muntinlupa, Las Piñas), adjacent provinces (Cavite, Laguna), and several southern Luzon provinces (Quezon, Batangas) being one of the few authorized TLM groups in the south of Metro Manila.

Foundation of the Latin Mass Society of Cavite[edit]

In 2019, several Cavite based members of the Hermandad spearheaded the organization and approval of a group based in the Diocese of Imus for the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass. On the 19th of March of the same year, the Latin Mass Society of Cavite was approved under the authority of the Most. Rev. Reynaldo G. Evangelista, D.D. as the duly established group for the TLM in the diocese.

The LMS initially had encountered some difficulties in obtaining celebrants for its Masses in the province, leading to a stagnation in its activities. Finally, it was incorporated to the Hermandad as a constituent chapter. One of its annual activities include the accompaniment of the processional image of the Agony in the Garden in the Holy Week procession in Bacoor, Cavite, with its Cavite members in attendance bearing its processional standard.

For activities conducted within the province, the group has since operated under the joint name Hermandad de la Sagrada Eucaristía-The Latin Mass Society of Cavite.

Activities[edit]

The Hermandad maintains a regular schedule of Sunday Masses, often in the form of sung Mass (Missa cantata). For this, it has established both sub-groups of altar servers and the schola cantorum. On special occasions, as its founding anniversary, it organizes Solemn High Masses (Missa Solemnis) with both a deacon and subdeacon. Some of the features commonly seen in the Masses of the Hermandad are the continued use of the elevation hymn per Hispanic tradition, the singing of Spanish language hymns, and the use of Spanish styled liturgical vestments. Moreover, the Hermandad has been organizing the recitation of the Divine Office during feast days and livestreaming through its page. With the availability of processional images, the Hermandad also conducts processions to further promote popular piety commonly found in the Philippines.

One of its longstanding projects is the translation work of the propers of the Traditional Latin Mass into the Tagalog language. This is conducted by the Comision sa Pagsasalin (Commission on Translation) of the joint Hermandad de la Sagrada Eucaristía-Latin Mass Society of Cavite. Such project is part of its campaign to bring the TLM to the masses in the Philippines by using the vernacular instead of English.

Titular patrons[edit]

The titular patron of the Hermandad, by its very name, is the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Holy Eucharist. Its principal feast day being the Feast of Corpus Christi, where the Hermandad holds a Mass and Eucharistic procession with Benediction. Its principal patroness is Our Lady of Montserrat owing to the Benedictine spirituality it possesses, and she is honored with three (3) feast days.

In addition, with its Benedictine spirituality, the Hermandad also has St. Benedict of Nursia as one of its patrons, whose Rule became a basis of the Hermandad's principles. Lastly, Saint Michael the Archangel is also one of the titular patrons due to him being the guardian of the Sacred Liturgy who is mentioned many times in the text of the Tridentine Mass.
