The Kintetsu 8A series (Japanese: 近鉄8A系, romanized: Kintetsu 8A-kei) is a commuter electric multiple unit (EMU) train type on order by the private railway operator Kintetsu Railway in Japan.
Overview[edit]
Details of the 8A series were announced in May 2024. The type is due to be introduced into service on the Nara, Kyoto, Kashihara, and Tenri lines from October 2024,[1] initially consisting of twelve 4-car sets.[2] The 8A series will be the first of a new rolling stock generation developed to replace approximately 450 vehicles manufactured in the 1960s,[3] over which they consume 45% less power.[4] Subsequent trains are scheduled for introduction on other lines, such as the Minami Osaka Line, from fiscal 2025, but they will not carry the 8A series designation.[2]
The 8A series will carry a two-tone livery designed by GK Industrial Design, inspired by that used by older Kintetsu commuter rolling stock.[2] They will also feature passenger-operable door switches, a first for Kintetsu (excluding cable cars).[4] LED lighting is used throughout.[2]
Internally, the trains are primarily equipped with rotating transverse seating. Two Yasashiba (やさしさ, lit. 'kindness') spaces are provided at the centremost doors of each car, designed for passengers with large luggage – such as strollers and suitcases – to use without worrying about other occupants. These spaces will be fitted with stoppers to prevent the luggage from moving.[1]
