Starring Janvi Rayala and Roopa Rayappa, the film explores Jyoti's life as a middle-class woman facing infertility and financial struggles, stuck in situations where people she trusted let her down. The film shows the strength of a middle-class family in India, pointing out the importance of empowerment and help.

Shoshite was theatrically released on 1 December 2023 and received positive reviews from critics.[1][2]

Plot[edit]

Jyoti, a middle-class woman living in a town in Karnataka, struggles with infertility while her husband, Kishore, a bank manager, is strict about money and is the dominant figure in their marriage. After reconnecting with an old college friend named Savita, Jyoti is introduced to a temple believed to solve infertility problems. However, Savita soon reveals she has money problems and needs to pay back a loan of Rs 5 lakhs to get her grandmother's gold from a pawnshop. Jyoti agrees to help but is left in trouble when Savita disappears with the money.

Jyoti asks her brother Avinash for help, and they eventually find Savita in a different village. Savita explains that her aunts were trying to claim rights to her grandmother's gold, and she needed the money for legal proceedings. Jyoti desperately needs the money back to wear her own gold at a family engagement ceremony to avoid more questions from her in-laws. When Savita refuses to return the money, Jyoti's alcoholic father Narayana borrows money from a local financier, who charges excessive interest rates and takes the original house documents as a guarantee.

As Jyoti struggles to repay the loan and protect herself from the financier, Savita disappears from town, leaving Jyoti with legal notice for the unpaid balance, and she finds out her father gave away their house documents as security. The story finishes with Jyoti navigating the consequences of her decisions and highlights the challenges faced by middle-class families in India, including infertility, financial challenges, and the struggle to balance cultural expectations and familial pressures. It underscores the importance of friendship and family support while also exposing the risks of trusting the wrong people.

In conclusion, Jyoti's story warns about the difficult choices many women in India are forced to make, often without any support or guidance. It also highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and support for women's rights and empowerment in India.
