The Middlebury College campus newspaper, known as "The Middlebury Campus[1]" or simply "The Campus," serves as the primary source of news and information for the Middlebury College community. Established in 1905, it has a long history of providing coverage of campus events, student life, academic developments, and local news relevant to the college and its surrounding area in Vermont. The newspaper is produced by students and offers opportunities for aspiring journalists, editors, photographers, and other contributors to gain hands-on experience in media production. Its content spans a wide range of topics, including feature articles, opinion pieces, investigative reporting, and coverage of cultural and sporting events. The Middlebury Campus plays a vital role in fostering discourse and keeping the college community informed about important issues and events and is published every Thursday in print and online.

History[edit]

While the publication was initially published monthly, it quickly became published weekly and expressed a full range of student views on social, political, and cultural issues for more than a century.[2]

The paper has provided invaluable insight into 20th century students responses to war, the role of fraternities and athletics on campus, racism and civil rights, sexism and sexual assault, women’s and gay rights, alcohol and drug abuse.[3]

Newspaper Coverage[edit]

The Campus designates several areas of news on its page, including Local, Arts & Culture, Opinion, Sports, Cartoons, Multimedia, and Projects.

Notable Stories[edit]

Investigation into MCAB uncovers months of unchecked spending on concerts, $250 jackets (May 9, 2024).[4][edit]

Investigative journalism revealed that the Middlebury College Activities Board [MCAB] had made several purchases unbeknownst to the Middlebury Student Government Association [SGA]. These purchases included over $1000 in Aritzia jackets that had no college branding nor any relation to the college. As of May 9, 2024, the SGA is writing a bill that seeks to increase oversight over MCAB. Several students and college employees on both sides of the matter were interviewed for the article.

Hundreds participate in pro-Palestine walk out from classes[5][edit]

Dozens of students and faculty at Middlebury College held a walkout in solidarity with Gaza, calling for divestment from companies involved in Israel's military campaign, part of Middlebury College’s encampment and larger university protests. The event, part of the National Students for Justice in Palestine's May Day movement, featured speeches, chants, and calls for action. Speakers referenced historical protests and recent divestment victories at other universities. The walkout emphasized the need for transparency in investments and highlighted specific companies like Lockheed Martin and Caterpillar. The event closed with a commitment to continue the cause. Additional programming included talks and discussions on Palestine and labor rights. The protest aimed to raise awareness and promote divestment from companies profiting from the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Zeitgeist[edit]

Zeitgeist is the annual survey, now in its sixth year, released by the Middlebury Campus.[6] Enrolled students provide information on their experiences, opinions, and frustrations while attending the college. In 2024, 1,207 students, or 47% of the student body completed the survey.
