English: Title: A small portion of the Fanny Bennett Hemlock Grove on one side of Spruce Knob, West Virginia's highest mountain, in Pendleton County
Physical description: 1 photograph : digital, tiff file, color. Notes: The stand is one of the few remaining patches of old-growth forest remaining in West Virginia, which was virtually denuded of trees after aggressive logging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These trees are old and quite tall, but hemlocks' girth does not compare with those of many other tree species. This 65-acre grove escaped logging through the stubborness and vigilance of its owner, Fanny Bennett, who kept outsiders (including lumber companies) at bay with guns and dogs.; Credit line: West Virginia Collection within the Carol M.
