Istanbul University Faculty of Economics is the first educational institution in Turkey named Faculty of Economics. The Faculty of Economics within Istanbul University, the oldest and largest educational institution in the country dating back to 1453, was established on December 14, 1936.[1] Faculty; It is located in Istanbul University Beyazıt Campus.[2][3][4][5]

Foreign founding professors[edit]

During the establishment phase of the Faculty of Economics, important European scholars who escaped from Nazi persecution took refuge in Turkey and joined the institution. Some of these are:

Graduates[edit]

The Faculty, which started education on March 4, 1937 with 118 students, had its first graduates at the end of the 1939-1940 academic year. The first graduate of the faculty (diploma number 1) is Adnan Altay Özbek and the first female graduate (diploma number 2) is Fatma Zehra Bereket. Three years after the faculty had its first graduates, the Faculty of Economics Alumni Association, which brought together the graduates, was established on March 1, 1943. Istanbul University Faculty of Economics Alumni and Members Foundation, whose short name is the Economics Foundation, was established on 13 November 1986.

Abdullah Gül, the 11th president of Türkiye, is a graduate of IU Faculty of Economics.
