Nomeh Unateze

Nomeh Unateze (Nomeh Unateze Amana Mbor) is a town in Nkanu-East local government area of Enugu state.

This ancient town (Nomeh Unateze) has a population of about ten thousand Indigenes and is bordered on the North by Ugbawka, on the east by Mburubu, Oduma on the south and Nenwe on the west with Their main language being the Igbo language.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDBACKGROUND

According to legend handed down through the ages, a certain man named Unateze, who lived in the present day Unateze is the father of two sons. One is named Nomeh while the second son is Nara. That is why the two town still bear the name (Nomeh Unateze and Nara Unateze). Both towns share a common ancestry and some striking similarities in culture.

Nomeh Unateze has Amaokoro and Amaigbo as her two major villages with various sub villages.

Amaokoro on the one hand Comprises of Uhuafor, Imeama and Amukabi sub villages.

Amaigbo on the other hand comprises of Obunegu Ogbuna, Umu-ekwésu, Uhuegu, Amagu, Uhuorji, Ogonogo Egu, Umuene sub villages and Station Quarters.

The station quarters serve as the economic and entertainment hub of Nomeh Unataeze.

The traditional ruler of Nomeh is Igwe Colonel I.O. Mbah (rtd.) A member of the Enugu state council of traditional rulers.

Nomeh Unateze has a literacy rate of up to 70% of its populace are. Nomeh is known for its agricultural produce, especially rice, yam, cassava, palm oil and various types of vegetables due to its year round agricultural seasons.

MARKET DAYS

The Ancient town of Nomeh Unataeze practice the four market day circle Eke, Orie, Afor and Nkwo with Eke being the town market day.

The Eke market day is very significant in Nomeh Unataeze as it is a day that both buyers and sellers of different wares from within and neighbouring towns grace the market place to carry out various commercial activities..

Also on the Eke market day, people from far away Aba, Ph, and other region troop in in their numbers to purchase high quality palm oil, rice, Garri, vegetables and other agricultural products in large quantities for resale in their respective locations.

NATURAL HERITAGE

A river, known as Nvuna snaked through all the villages of Nomeh, providing drinking water as well as aquatic environment that supports an all year round farming though irrigation.

Apart from drinking water and agricultural advantage of the great Nvuna River, there is also a large deposit of sharp sand and plaster sand in the riverfor building projects which has served as a means of livelihood for the people and has also created employment for those in neighbouring town.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Apart from being a source of livelihood to the people, the Great NVUNA RIVER is also a tourist sight to behold as there are various unique spots for camping and sight seeing.

Another major and significant tourist attraction in the ancient town of Nomeh Unataeze is the Ndivuvu lake where tourists can relax in the cozy environment and watch fishes climb palm trees to get palm fruits (a wonderful sight to behold indeed).

There is also the boiling lake known as OTU-YEYE where tourist would experience a lake that never settles all year round.

The traditional heritage of Nomeh Unataeze is also another tourist experience a traveller would not wish you miss as there are several cultural groups which include the great OKANGA cultural troop with their beautiful and ancient masquerades that tells the stories of how the ancestors lived in their time.

There is also other troupes such as;

Oji-Onu cultural group Igede troup Ikpa and ekekwe troup Ogene uhuafor and so on.

There is also a railway network that passed through the south east part of Nigeria from Maiduguri to Port Harcourt and Nomeh town is one of the towns where the trains has a station.

RELIGION Nomeh Unataeze is predominantly Christians and has produced quite a number of clergy (Rev fathers, Rev sisters and pastors) who are making waves in their respective denominations.

DIRECTION

A tourist that wants to visit Nomeh from outside Nigeria will have to land at the airport in Enugu town, go on a car through the Enugu-Port Harcout express road down to Onwe junction Arab construction Nenwe then turn left drive through Uhueze Nenwe (3mins drive) here lies the aerial and epic grain view of Ancient city of Nomeh Unateze.

Second direction go on a car through the Enugu-Port Harcout express road down to turn left at the four corner junction Ozalla. After tuning left you will need to go straight to Obe, down to Umueze, Agbani, turn right at Agbani after the rail line and go down to Ugbawka.

After Ugbawka, there is Nara town, the home of Igwe Nathan Ogbu, the Unateze 1 of Nara town. After the town of Nara, the tourist should turn to the right and head to Mburubu, immediately after Mburubu, there lies the ancient town of Nomeh.
