Draw procedure[edit]

How have 200 ties for the extra preliminary round, 166 ties for the preliminary round and 116 ties for the first qualifying round been drawn. Wouldn't draw the ties one by one take a very long time? --Sayka41 (talk) 23:11, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On the website of the FA Cup they say that the qualifying round are on a regional basis. How do they do it? Do they form regional groups and then draw the ties within each group? If it is so, what criteria will be used? I'm from Germany and we have another cup system. And I hope you understand my English ;-) --Sayka41 (talk) 11:29, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your English is perfect, I can read it fine. And I'm not an expert, but what seems to happen is the first two or three rounds are drawn with clubs only drawing other clubs in their own county FA (to reduce the travel costs for clubs that can operate on a budget of less than £10,000) and they draw multiple rounds in one go to allow clubs longer to plan their journeys (some clubs can't even play their game in their home ground, so they have to find another stadium, or agree to play an away game at home instead or something). If there are an odd number of clubs, a spare club will get drawn against a club from a neighbouring county.
The draws are "regional" but they don't announce the regions like the Football League Trophy has a North and a South section - they just do it all at once and don't mention that they're drawing one region at a time. After three or four rounds, the draw becomes "less regional" - i.e. they can play teams from other counties nearby but you still won't be travelling across the country. I think the competition only becomes fully national by the First Round Proper.
The FA don't really announce exactly how they do this stuff, though, so my knowledge of this all comes down to just knowing where clubs are from and noticing patterns in where they get drawn against. Falastur2 Talk 17:18, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Like the UEFA who never announces how they form the groups in the Europa League qualifying ;-) In Germany it's quite simple: We have 21 regional football associations. Each of them has got its own cup competition for its amateur teams. The winner of each cup (+ 3 runners-up from the largest associations) qualify for the german cup of the next season along with the teams of the first and second bundesliga and 4 Teams of the third league so that "only" 64 Teams are in the "DFB-Pokal". But I think the English cup system is very interesting, with the replays if a match is tied and the open draws without seeding.

There's a decent description here on the NLM forums of the structure of the first few rounds, though I'm not sure if they've just worked it out via deduction or someone's spoken to the FA competitions department baout it. This year the regional groups seem to have been done by combining county FA areas rather than leagues as they've occasionally done in the past, so teams from South Yorkshire for example have been drawn with teams from Manchester area, West Yorkshire etc. It's definitely not just within County FAs this year, as the 3 nearest teams to me, all in or near Sheffield, have been drawn against teams from the Manchester and Liverpool FAs in their first ties. - Chrism would like to hear from you 12:49, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Number in brackets[edit]

At the head of the tables it says Home team (Tier) or Away team (Tier). The figure in brackets is the tier or level of the English football league system at which that club plays. Bretonbanquet (talk) 00:24, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
