An attempt?[edit]

Is the coup a confirmed success?? Or should we wait till we have an idea on Bongo’s whereabouts. Borgenland (talk) 05:08, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information is still preliminary at this point, but given that the military speech was broadcast on state television, one could assume they effectively succeeded Bedivere (talk) 05:33, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Given less than 24 hours has passed since the coup, it is too early to tell. However, it does appear that this even has hit the world stage and the video of Bongo appealing for help from those in his country and outside of his country suggests that the coup was at least temporarily successful. In the days to come, we will learn if the coup will be lasting or whether it will be overturned. Jurisdicta (talk) 02:59, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Larger international context....[edit]

I think it would be a good idea to include a section discussing the international context, for example parallels with the recent coup in Niger and relations with France.

From what I understand, the Bongo government, like the pre-coup government in Niger, and like many of France's former African colonies, had maintained close political and economic ties with France ever since the end of formal colonial rule, and the coup governments have been distancing themselves from France. -93.222.133.11 (talk) 08:06, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While we can make our own correlations between events and look into the past, there has not yet been any significant public statement by international actors giving their support to any parties involved. We cannot assume the international reactions Pickled Pigeon (talk) 08:27, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely. However too early now as OR.
VERY OR by me, but smells like wagner. (also note the expansion attacks in Russia overnight).37.252.92.217 (talk) 08:28, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, I do not think that Wagner has any type of presence in Gabon, due to geographical distance between the African countries, where Wagner has presence, and Gabon itself. (Also take in consideration the distance between Russia and Gabon, you can probably fit a US without Alaska in that distance). I support the Idea of my friend here -93.222.133.11. I believe it is important to note the international geopolitic implications of this event. The problem is that, the section would be incredibly French-centric/centered, and the information that we have about the strong foreign relations of countries with Gabon isn't enough to cover the incident at all. Gabriel A. Álvarez N. (talk) 20:42, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the consensus that it is not a correlation we should make as it has not been done (as reported by reputable sources). While it would be interested and may be of value after the effects of the coup are solidified, it seems to be premature to do so now. Jurisdicta (talk) 14:52, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I made a link to Francafrique in See also. That could be a good starting point. Borgenland (talk) 14:54, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Casualties[edit]

Are there any citations to prove 2 people died? Because I am currently listening to a live Aljazeera broadcast that it was Oligui who announced Bongo's arrest. Borgenland (talk) 10:27, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the only citation I found that noted two deaths of soldiers, but it is in relation to a coup in 2019, not the current one. https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/30/africa/gabon-military-officers-say-power-seized-election-intl-hnk/index.html Jurisdicta (talk) 22:16, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Protect page[edit]

We have had two users vandalizing this page with sexually obscene imagery. Can someone please lock this page for autoconfirmed users only? Borgenland (talk) 14:35, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bugs?[edit]

I added 722 bytes of material in the reactions section but only 20 came out on the page history, even though I didn't cut anything. Is there a bug in the system? Source for UK calling the coup unconstitutional?[edit]

I've looked for a source that stated that the UK called the coup "unconstitutional", as stated on this page, but I can't find it anywhere... Could someone change the text or at least add the source? 151.40.202.14 (talk) 16:44, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I found the source, but now I'm having a bit of trouble with inserting it. The source is [1]https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-statement-on-gabon#:~:text=Minister%20for%20Development%20and%20Africa,the%20restoration%20of%20constitutional%20government.
Could someone add it for me? 151.40.202.14 (talk) 16:56, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is a UK press release. See WP:PRSOURCE. If we had no other source, we could cite it, but since there is already an article cited that supports the statement, I see no reason to include the press release. It is good to mention it here on the talk page though, because it confirms that the article cited is not made up. So I have changed the title on this discussion, so if someone researching it can find it here. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 17:43, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
