A potted biography[edit]

The cover of one of his books states the following: Born 1928. Graduated U. Stuttgart 1952. High-school teacher. From 1972 Professor of Didactics of Mathematics, U. Frankfurt. Coach of German IMO team 1977-1984. Federal Cross of Merit 1990. David Hilbert Award 1991. Hope this helps. Deltahedron (talk) 14:41, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The years don't add up in the article. If he was a (high-school?) teacher for 18 years, and then 1952 became assistant professor, his teaching career began at an early age. YohanN7 (talk) 20:37, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it's from this which is maybe clearer and makes sense.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 20:58, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That page appears to be an accurate copy of the back cover of Exploring Mathematics with your Computer of which my original post was a summary. Unfortunately I cannot say whether a book cover blurb is a reliable source for a biography. Deltahedron (talk) 21:08, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not really a reliable source, though for book blurb it doesn't seem to be taking any liberties with the truth. I posted it in the AfD more to help people look for sources, as at the time there was so little to go on. If he's notable better sources should be out there - the whole idea of notability is someone's taken note of you, and if it happened in the last 50 years there's bound to be records.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 22:13, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pitfalls of original research[edit]

I have removed the assertion that Engel was at Paris in 1993. This is firstly original research, based on the reading of a published paper of his with that date which appears to give that as his address. Secondly, it is unjustified: he might have been there somewhat earlier, depending on the publication schedules of the journal. Thirdly, and most importantly, it is wrong. The author's address comes at the end of the papers in that journal, so Paris is the address of the author of the previous article. If you look at the end of Engel's article, it gives his address as Frankfurt, as one would expect. Deltahedron (talk) 19:11, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
