A 1982 book?[edit]

My copy of the book is copyrighted in 1982. Amazon lists that as the publication date of the hardcover but then list 1984 as paperback publication date, as does Google. I think that we should use the copyright date. [[http://www.amazon.com/Benevolent-Assimilation-American-Philippines-1899-1903/dp/0300030819/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1304144120&sr=8-3-fkmr0]] By the way the Kindle edition is listed as being published on "December 31, 1981" and I am not sure why. --Bruce Hall (talk) 06:20, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article cites ISBN 978-0-300-03081-5 in a couple of places, from which which Special:BookSources finds variations listed above.
I have the ISBN 9780300030815 variation in paperback. The copyright page says, "Copyright © 1982 by Yale University."
The journal article "Stuart Creighton Miller. "Benevolent Assimilation": The American Conquest of the Philippines, 1899–1903. New Haven: Yale University Press. 1982. Pp. xii, 340. $25.00". The American Historical Review. 88 (5). December 1, 1983 says, "Miller Stuart Creighton. 'Benevolent Assimilation': The American Conquest of the Philippines, 1899–1903 . New Haven: Yale University Press. 1982. Pp. xii, 340. $25.00.", documenting the publication of the 1982 variation. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 04:00, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The cites should list the ISBN of the variation which was used to support information in the article. This might be several different variations, but that is not currently the case. Perhaps the article ought to mention that the book was first published in 1982. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 04:00, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this document titled benevolent assimilation[edit]

I just want know 131.226.84.93 (talk) 13:13, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article is about this book, which has that title. The lead section of the article has info abut the reason he book has that title. The title echoes the head of the final paragraph of a proclamation issued by U.S. president [[William McKinley" which reads as follows:
BENEVOLENT ASSIMILATION

substituting the mild sway of justice and right for arbitrary rule. In the fulfillment of this high mission, supporting the temperate administration of affairs for the greatest good of the governed, there must be sedulously maintained the strong arm of authority, to repress disturbance and to overcome all obstacles to the bestowal of the blessings of good and stable government upon the people of the Philippine Islands under the free flag of the United States.
