how about pronunciation - cockburn or coburn as sometimes happens with the surname ?

Re: "Co-burn" -- the "k" is silent

To be honest, I've never heard the name Cockburn pronounced Cock-burn — to the best of my knowledge, it's always pronounced Coe-burn. Bearcat 01:45, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cockburn Island WAS a nice place to visit at one time. We have a hunt camp on the Island(currently for sale), and used it during the summer too. There's virtually nothing left to see. Much of the Island has been altered--if not destroyed--by an American logging firm. The annual fall deer hunt has all but vanished too. Also, there are no stores left in Meldrum Bay(on Manitoulin) where we used to stock up on gas and groceries before heading over to Cockburn. The boat launch is worn-out and neglected, and Meldrum Bay Outfitters closed last year due to a dispute with the Province over their liquor license. A sad ending to what once was a beautiful and peaceful place. I haven't been back for four years now.

Population[edit]

The number of permanent residents varies from year to year but is typically only a small handful. The 1996 census shows a population of two. In 2001, the Census office changed the rules of counting people in very small centres, so that counts of less than 15 people were published as rounded off to the nearest five, showing a population of 15, 10, 5 or 0 (zero). The actual population hadn't changed from 1996-2001, just the reporting method. This was done to protect the privacy of people living in what might be the only household in a tiny census district, so the exact number of persons residing in it cannot be clearly ascertained from published figures.

Motor Vehicles[edit]

The Youtube videos of the island show motor vehicles parked at the marina. If the only means of transportation to the island is private boat, how do the cars get there? Few private boats can carry that much weight. Dynzmoar (talk) 16:26, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think the anonymous haha referred to the name's resemblance to cock burn, an unfortunate injury incurred by, e.g., nude sunbathing. I take it the settlement's actual pronunciation is closer to CO-burn? Perhaps an imitative pronunciation schematic would be in order.
