The term horse farming[edit]

I'm thinking a better title is something like Horse business in Kentucky or Horse industry in Kentucky. "Horse farming" sounds like you plant them and they grow! LOL! (Though people do say "Dairy farming..." oh well). Anyway, "horse industry" is kind of the buzzword the horse people like. Also, in the case of Kentucky, the racing industry, auction sales (think Keeneland) and horse show industry (think Kentucky Horse Park) are also major players. Many national horse organizations (like the USEF as an example) are also headquartered in Kentucky, particularly in the Lexington area. Definitely a huge component... Yes, I've written several articles about horses in Kentucky, including Belle Reve Farm, Lexington Junior League Horse Show, and American Saddlebred Horse Association. All of those are about Saddlebreds, which are also pretty popular there (they are show horses, not racehorses). Pretty much everything related to horses is in Kentucky in one form or another, like the International Museum of the Horse. "Horse farming" may seem odd, but it's a common term in the East (maybe not in Montana, you probably have more horse ranching out there 😉) as are chicken farming, sheep farming, etc. I do think horse industry could be better, though, especially considering that a lot of the horses raced in Kentucky are brought in from other states or even countries. Black fences are less expensive?[edit]

This was a new factoid to me, and I found something that could explain it if the fences are Black Locust [1]. Can anybody confirm or disconfirm? - Brianhe (talk) 21:01, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure about the different kinds of wood, although it'd have to be hardwood, but black paint itself is cheaper. Another plus is that a black-painted fence doesn't turn green with mold on the north side like a white fence would. White Arabian Filly ^Neigh 23:47, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The enormous difference in the cost of paint is mentioned in the source article. I remember when I was touring that they also mentioned the black fences didn't need to be repainted as frequently. Jlvsclrk (talk) 00:03, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unwanted horses[edit]

Disposition of unwanted horses could be a new section. Found at least one really good source [2] which suggests that there may be dumping going on in Western Kentucky.
