Olympics[edit]

Question about the Olympics - do we state the results of every medal event, or just the most notable ones (however way we can determine that). Sam Vimes 21:37, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Even as the IOC often and correctly notes that an event doesn't have one particular winner (scilicet, that each of the three medallists is a winner), I think it would be appropriate that we note only the gold-medal winner for each event (if, fancying myself a poor man's David Wallechinsky, I recall correctly, the Games of the Winter Olympiad feature 84 events, as against 301 in the Summer Games, for which some culling would be required). For events that one finds to be most notable, or for those that are generally seen to be rather remarkable (e.g., the 1994, 1998, and 2002 men's 4x10-kilometer cross-country relays), an enumeration of the three medal winners and the relevant margin of victory would seem to be in order. In assessing notability, I suppose one could consider whether generally the event (either in the fact of its occurrence or in the specific fashion in which it took place) would be remarkable to those whom one would most likely find on the English language version of our page. The downhill event in Alpine skiing, I think, would surely be one event for which we would include complete details, given that the event has high-level practictioners in the United States, Canada, Western Europe (e.g., France), Eastern Europe (e.g., for the purposes of this discussion, Austria), and even Northern Europe (e.g., Norway), unlike many of the events of the Winter Games, which one finds to be universally practiced but not universally practiced well. Deaths in month[edit]

Obviously these should only be sports related deaths, but why only the 3 or 4 most recent? This page gets archived as "Month year in sports" and a complete list for the month seems appropriate. -- SGBailey 23:50, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think every sports death for the month needs to be included; I think including the 8-10 most prominent is sufficient. I agree that removing names after a week is unnecessary, unless the list is getting too long and the less prominent figures are being dropped. There are other places (primarily Current deaths) where everyone can be listed. MisfitToys 20:27, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Length of descriptions[edit]

We appear to be getting increasingly verbose with the descriptions on the sporting events - I think we should have a target to aim at (although if the event was exceptionally eventful we should be allowed to go over that limit). Scores[edit]

Today, I decided to put the scores from yesterday's (27 April) MLB games, because no one's done it since last year. The very next edit, someone takes them away. Since when was it okay to ONLY have FA Cup and Test Cricket scores in the Current Events page?

I think it should be our endeavour here to record as many "major-league" professional sport scores as possible from all around the world. MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL and MLS in North America, the various football premierships, Australian Rules Football, Cricket, and everything else. --Kitch 00:53, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We only cover regular season baseball when there is a history-making event (no-hitter, five homers in an inning, most homers in a month, etc.) The same goes for the NBA and the NHL and Aussie Rules Footy. Right now, we don't have NBA or NHL playoffs because they have seperate pages. Only when they get to their conference and league finals then we will post scores, except baseball where we cover all post-season games. The NFL is the exception to this because they play only one game a week rather than seven (or more) for baseball or the two or three a week in basketball and hockey.
