Readability of the lead[edit]

Showing my ignorance, I had to look up orogeny, a key term to understanding this article, and the opening of the lead. It felt like jumping into the middle of a technical discussion rather than the highlights of the article with some introduction to the topic. It was a challenge to discern which era’s activity resulted in the Arizona in front of us now. I think I figured it out from the article, but had to skip the lead, lost in jargon. Is there anyone who could make the lead easier to read? - - Prairieplant (talk) 15:22, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Intro problem[edit]

First of all, thanks for this article! My family has been in Arizona since 1890, and I appreciate the ability to read this. In the intro, these sentences seem not to follow: "The geology of Arizona began to form in the Precambrian. Igneous and metamorphic crystalline basement rock may have been much older, but was overwritten during the Yavapai and Mazatzal orogenies in the Proterozoic." Basement rock may have been much older than the Precambrian? I am less than a geology neophyte, but is there anything on earth before the Precambrium? I don't know how to fix this. Can somebody help?
