Spam easter egg
Is this "easter egg" legit?
- "Another Easter egg: Add gtalk.spaminfo@googlemail.com to your buddy list and send it a text message of "spam", to get simple instructions on how to avoid spam in Jabber networks."

Diversifying

- Yeah you're right. It was the www.google.com/talk at that was wrong - someone changed that for no reason. Well maybe not "no reason"- talk.google.com redirects to www.google.com/talk . However, it was definitely the subdomain talk.google.com that had an active Jabber server - read here. Nonsense?
"One blogger also reports the current logging appears to render in URL-friendly form, suggesting a possible integration with gmail's threading, searching, and history for Google Talk discussions[1]. However some say escaping characters into hex is just a sensible part of keeping the Jabber protocol open, and that it's nothing to do with URLs."
Isn't this just nonsense? The characters in the log files need to be escaped someway, or you could mess up someones log files causing them to display incorrectly by just sending a multi line message to him. URL-encoding is a very easy way to escape character data, because it will in most cases only require a single function call. --Shreddy 15:10, 28 August 2005 (UTC)
- I have no idea about the logging, but isn't this just speculation? It does not seem like a blogger's guess about the possible future of google talk is appropriate for an encylopedia. Are we not recording what is known, not what is possible? -- Fudoreaper 18:27:51, 2005-08-28 (UTC)
Logging / Cache
Has anyone figured out the way Google Talk Logs / Caches the last couple of conversations? Most importantly - WHERE? For privacy purposes - I would like to clean up my past conversations - that seems reasonable, right? -asmadeus 17:17, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

Logos at the beginning of articles
I've seen this a few times in the English Wikipedia, but are the logos at the beginning of articles about software really needed? - To me there's a difference between putting a logo in a frame on the right and describing it as "NASA logo", and putting it above the article, unframed and without description, like it is the case in many software-related articles. --Kurt Jansson 17:18, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

No VoIP
I changed the article to reflective that Google Talk does not support Voice over IP. I saw User:Dan100 of Wikinews made that change in the Wikinews article Google Talk released in beta form. See change here. He cited this article and I'm pretty sure they are right. It would be VoIP if you could talk to someone on a regular telephone. Literally if you say your voice is traveling over the internet - that would mean voice over internet protocol. However that is not the meaning people use when they talk about Voice over IP. (By that same definition, if you listened to a singer over streaming MP3 audio, that would count as VoIP - which makes no sense.) -Hyad 22:50, August 27, 2005 (UTC)
- At what point did "Voice over IP" come to mean "communication with legacy telephone equipment"? There is no defined association between VoIP and the PSTN. To quote wikipedia, "Voice over IP is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or any other IP network." Notice there is no mention of the PSTN. I disagree with the assertation that it's not VoIP until you're connected to the PSTN.
- Additionally, listening to an mp3 stream of a singer is not VoIP because you're not having a conversation; it's not 2-way communication, but simply a one-way broadcast. -- Fudoreaper 18:39:12, 2005-08-28 (UTC)
- I agree - I don't know what you're talking about, Hyad. Voice over IP is just that - Voice over the Internet Protocol - I can't see how PSTN is anything to do with IP. It's generally accepted that this "voice" is bi-directional, a la telephony. I don't see anyone else not referring to Google Talk as a VoIP network. VoIP is VoIP - not VoIP&PSTN. Point-Missing?
I think this article is missing the whole point in Google Talk - it's primarily about the "talking" part (i.e. VoIP), not the instant messenging. I didn't even know it also did IM until I actually tried it out, as all the talk I heard about Google Talk was that it was a VoIP client. --Zilog Jones 16:22, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Unsourced tag
I noticed that this section contains a bunch of unsourced statements and what might be opinions of editors. The following seem to be problematic:
- The criticism leveled in the first paragraph is not cited.
- The second paragraph claims "several critics" have called the service "underwhelming"; and also that "others" have speculated about future features. Neither of these link to anything.
- None of the bugs are sourced.
- The issue with GTalk and Jabber servers is not sourced.
- The final paragraph is unsourced.
If we take all of these out, the section would be about one-fifth of its current size. If you feel any of the above are important, you should find a source. Bowmanjj 04:01, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Revision history?
We don't know why but there are no logs available about changes made to Google Talk. Like any good software, we look forward to them.
- Here are all my version upgrades (C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk has all the upgrades), I dont remember which ones added which feature, but .66 was the release. I wonder if you are required to upgrade, or it happens next time you launch, or if it can recover a partial download of an upgrade or even if Google Talk can connect with the release version. (last 2 digits, wonder why they're all even)

Offline messages?
The article says: "One major difference between Google Talk and its most obvious IM competitor, Microsoft's MSN Messenger, is that Google Talk allows users to send messages to contacts who are offline. This is a feature that has been a staple of ICQ's and Yahoo's IM client, but was notably absent from the MSN Messenger client."
I can't see any way to send messages to offline users. If the way that is being refered to is through email, MSN messenger can do that too. --24.222.158.21 14:45, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

As of August 2006, there is still no support for offline XMPP messaging by the gmail.com IM server. This statement simply is not true: "Google Talk uses Jabber and XMPP to provide real-time extensible messaging and presence events, including offline messaging (only through non-Google clients like Adium)." --Luke-Jr 05:23, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
List of bugs
This list of bugs is written in the purpose of being useful for someone sometime in the future, maybe to know what Google Talk used to be or what Google still hasn't fixed in future versions. I think this is more useful for all of us than sending a bug report to Google, who might already have fixed the bugs in their latest development versions. This way we ensure it will not end up in /dev/null.
- Smileys in URLs are highlighted like http://example.com/Example:Duplicate_articles. This bug is also found in Gaim, but not MSN Messenger. Discovered by hans863 --Shreddy 20:37, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

Voicemail limitations
It seems to me that Gmail + Google Talk does not keep copies of outgoing voicemail and that voicemail can only be sent to other Gmail + Google Talk users. I don't know why the latter has to be the case as sending voicemail simply involves attaching an mp3 file to a text message.
Also, the recording functions is very limited, as it is not possible to pause, edit or append to voice recordings before sending them.
If these are indeed limitations, they should be added to the article.

What is the Inter-server Protocol?
We all know G-Talk implements a subset of XMPP for client access and federation, but what is it using internally to actually provide a high availability system? It most surely doesn't run on XMPP (also because that wouldn't scale sufficiently). And what happened to the original plans that G-Talk was also supposed to support SIMPLE? --lynX 07:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Google Talk with GAFYD
The mentioned bug where clicking within Google Talk to check your inbox when using Google Apps for Your Domain appears to have been solved for me at least. Would someone else confirm this and then we can remove this bug from the article. Jake.anders 11:19, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Statistics would give significant depth to this article, eg.: number of users within first month? Number of users within first year? Number of users now? Comparisons in growth to similar products (eg. Skype). Natebailey 07:41, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

AIM Integration
In December of 2005 Google announced that they would be working on AIM integration so that Google Talk users could chat with AIM users. Now its over 1 year and 10 months later with the feature has still not been implemented. Does anyone know what has become of this feature? Has it been axed? Is it still being worked on (and if so, what is taking so long?). If anyone knows it should definitely be added to the article, because it is a major point of interest to Google Talk users. -Zomic13 03:06, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

"Malware" section
I'm not sure about the "Malware" section. First, the headline without any further explanation might make it look as if GoogleTalk was accused of being malware itself for casual readers. This, however, is not so (except perhaps to the extent that people mistrust Google's data collecting habits in general, which might justify calling all Google software "malware" for some people). Second, the section only describes, in some detail, how malware is spread in general by social engineering. This, however, is nothing specific to GoogleTalk (as is briefly acknowledged in the section itself). The very same things can be said about all other forms of internet communication, including all messenger software, social networks and good old e-mail. My impression is that the section is bloating the article with redundant information (this belongs in Social engineering (security), if it's not already there) and may even create the impression that as messengers go, GoogleTalk was particularly vulnerable to malware-spreading, which is not the case. The section should either be deleted altogether, or reduced to a brief warning - (such as "Like all internet communication software, GoogleTalk can be used to infect careless users' computers with malware".) Latest version release date?
Hmm, the About screen of Google Talk on my Windows machine says 2005-2006, yet the Wiki says 2007. Is that a bug in the About screen? Or is it really 2006 and not 2007? NakiBest (talk) 18:46, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

I live in BC and have BC driver's license for many years.One weekend night,I did not aware my driver license was expire and was caught by police. I presented my driver license the police gave me a ticket.That ticket says,No driver's license,commit motor vehicle act offensive section 24/1 ticket amount $276.
The next working day I went to ICBC renew my driver license.She gave me a new driver licese with in 10 minutes.I did not need any test or examination. At the same time I made a dispute.
I received a hearing notice,now.
I don't think in my case have to get a such big fine.I think the police should made a wrong law section.I think it may conform to section 33/1 fine $81.If he kind enough give me a warning people would be appreciate in our government officer and more respect them.

Split article into separate articles (or sections) re service and client?
"Google Talk" seems to be used by Google to describe two distinct products:
- The Google Talk client is "a downloadable chat application" See http://www.google.com/talk/about.html
- The Google Talk service is an IM service that provides both text and voice communication. It can be accessed with a variety of clients, including, of course, the Google Talk Client. http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html
(To further confuse things, Google offers a separate video and voice plugin that can be used from within gmail.) I think it would make sense to have separate articles to discuss the service and the software. --Sjsilverman (talk) 17:09, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
- Looking at this article more closely, I see it is almost entirely about the service, not the client. Since there isn't enough content about the client to merit an article, I think sections is the way to go. For the same reason, intro and textbox, both of which focus on client, should be changed. This does not seem to work anymore.
I used this a year ago, but don't seem to be able to any more. Apparently they replaced it (or folded it in to) Google Voice with video chat. Someone who understands this better than me should update this.

Talk vs. Chat
As I understand it Google Chat refers to chat and voip within gmail etc. and (presumably) the network itself while Google Talk refers specifically to the somewhat dormant (though awesome) desktop application. This would seem to be corroborated by the title of this page http://www.google.com/talk/ and the documentation pages at http://support.google.com/chat/?hl=en&topic=1725163. Kaspersky flags Google-talk as a vulnability

Current Google Talk download link
If someone wants to work this into the article (possibly external links), the download link to the current version of the application is http://dl.google.com/googletalk/googletalk-setup.exe (the link still works to download the client installer as of today) and is not listed anywhere on Google's site (since the Google Talk portion has been removed in favor of Google Hangouts). AIM screen name
- Google Talk users will not require an AIM screen name in order to communicate with AIM users.
Where does this info come from, I've heard no Google nor AOL official position regarding that.

Discontinued is likely wrong wording / users transitioned to hangouts
Made some recent changes in an attempt to clarify, but the grammar for these changes could probably use some work. Mostly just intended to make it clear that google's XMPP server still operates, though only enough to be backward-compatible and provide limited interaction with users who are fully transitioned to the Hangouts Chat ecosystem. --Kuzetsa (talk) 03:53, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
Is / Was (multiple reversions)
This section of the talk page is in the hopes of preventing further reversion / edit warring - The Google Talk servers now only exist in order to be forward-compatible with users of the successor: Hangouts. Because of this operational transition, I feel it best for the article to say "was" (past tense) whenever referring to features or usage scenarios which only apply to the former / legacy Google Talk service. Conversely, for any current / active / still-operational features, such as inter-compatibility with hangouts users, "is" (or otherwise present tense) makes grammatical sense.
