Reinstating the Scientists for Future (S4F) section[edit]

Let me start by saying I know Gregor professionally and he alerted me to this particular edit.

Namely that the section titled Scientists for Future (S4F) was recently removed on WP:PROMO grounds. Scientists for Future has its own article. Here is the diff in question.

This is the first time I recall having visited this page [correction: did make some trivial copy‑edits in January]. And I have just read the material in question. I also subscribe to the S4F mailing list and have attended a couple of S4F events in the past.

My view is that deleted passage is indeed accurate and significant and does not constitute soapboxing, self‑advancement, or some other form of inappropriate promotion as covered by WP:PROMO. My recommendation therefore is to seek some better reliable secondary sources for that copy and then essentially roll back the material in question.

I know from my own experience that the text is accurate — but of course that is not remotely adequate for Wikipedia. So I'll chase down some better supporting material and post some revised wording here within the next week.

Please contribute your thoughts. Best, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 11:59, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just added the new content below. Please note:
• I believe I have addressed the WP:PROMO concerns of the earlier editor by rewriting the sentence "He was inspired by the initiative of Belgian scientists .." to remove the reference to personal motivations. Indeed I was unable to find direct support for that sentiment from a reliable secondary source in any case.
• The remark about "some cause" is not appropriate I believe. There is a clear objective, namely climate protection. And notability is established through the quality of the references: two peer-reviewed journal articles, two mainstream media pieces, a full-length book from a scientific publishing house, and an official photograph from federal government.

Revised content for the Scientists for Future passage[edit]

Revised content as promised. I will leave this up for a week before migrating the material to the main article if no comments are forthcoming. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 16:54, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Together with other scientists, Hagedorn founded the grassroots movement Scientists for Future (S4F) in March 2019.[1][2][3] This initiative was inspired by a group of Belgian scientists who had earlier offered their support to the nascent Fridays for Future movement in January 2019 under the banner of Scientists for Climate.[4][5][6] The first statement by Scientists For Future was written by a circle of 30 people and signed by 26800 scientists in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.[6] The key authors also published a similar statement in Science with scientists from the United States, including Michael Mann and Katharine Hayhoe.[7] Hagedorn represented Scientists for Future at an environmental meeting with the German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in early 2020.[8]
