Olympic Sport?[edit]

How is this an Olympic sport when there is no direct qualification for Oceania? Has the Olympic flag only have 4 rings now?--Kpaspery (talk) 22:36, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Australia and New Zealand moved to Asia if i'm correct after the IHF removed the direct entry for the WC's. And the results from the Australia women's team at the latest WC are not good and won't make the IHF think about changing anything, tbh. Kante4 (talk) 23:11, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Kante4 that is correct. Australia & New Zealand were in the Asian Cup. But how were the two Oceania teams decided? There were no regional qualifiers meaning the IHF has no interest in growing the sport in Oceania. The two riches countries provided teams. I have no idea why the Olympic committee except this.--Kpaspery (talk) 21:59, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I guess all teams from Oceanie could have competed but only those two entered? Nevertheless, with the way right now, without support from the IHF, Handball will never get better in Oceania sadly. Kante4 (talk) 22:02, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
IHF have been concentrating on Youth & Junior development in the region recently (past 10 years). The Juniors have had regular male & female competitions & a representative has traveled to world cups & IHF Challenge. The Youth has had championships as well mainly pushed by Australia and hosted in Handball friendly countries like Tahiti & New Caledonia (French Pacific). There is also a big push into Beach Handball and Oceania regularly sends team to the Youth Olympics.
Sadly the senior game is not developing at all and the youth & juniors have no pathways to senior handball. Which is quiet sad.--HandballHero (talk) 22:30, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Russia?[edit]

Does anyone know what Russia being banned from Tokyo 2020 means for this tournament? AFAIK, the IHF hasn't made any official statements yet, but it makes no sense to have Russia play in the qualification if they can't qualify. Logically, Germany as 8th in the World Championship should get the spot. dllu (talk) 12:45, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

They are allowed to compete in the qualifying and then compete as Russian athletes at the 2020 Summer Olympics if i'm right. Kante4 (talk) 13:58, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If that is true (which the IHF hasn't confirmed), the ban is meaningless, in other words... dllu (talk) 19:31, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely. I think it's done like that to allow clean athletes to compete. How clean they really are is another topic... Kante4 (talk) 19:32, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
