Edits to this Page[edit]

As a member of the HOY committee I was asked to correct and update the original page created by Phil Ryan in February 2018. I have done so. If anyone has issues with the content or style, please contact me. The regatta organizers do not intend to have an extensive Wikipedia page as the essential information will be on the event's own WWW page.JimBreen (talk) 02:48, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Race Distance[edit]

Since its inception the HOY has been stated as being over an 8.6km course. This was apparently derived from a speedometer reading from a vehicle driving along the roads running beside the river. Recent GPS-based measures indicate that the typical course followed by boats in the event is just over 8km. Therefore from 2018 the organizing committee has decided to describe the even as being over 8.0km. JimBreen (talk) 11:34, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

" We are unsure how, or when, the distance of 8.6kms was decided. The Yarra is tidal and the measured distance varies with an impeller. The distance by road, measured in a car, is 8.6kms.
Now, 44 years after the introduction of the metric system for distance in Australia, we can measure the course pretty accurately by using a personal GPS. The distance from the Judges' box in the Melbourne CBD to the Hawthorn Bridge measured with a StrokeCoach GPS is a few metres over 8 kms.
So, despite the complexities of tidal flows, we are naming the 60th HOTY an 8 km race."JimBreen (talk) 12:19, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
