GA nomination[edit]

I nominated this article for GA. It was moved from Galveston, Texas a while back so that the history section there could be trimmed. This article is well written and sourced and just sitting here waiting to be promoted :) Hope this is OK with everyone. Thanks, Postoak (talk) 21:30, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"First" settlement[edit]

Just wondering about something if anybody has more info ...

Although non-authoritative sources often talk about the Aury/Lafitte settlement as the first significant European settlement on the island, if I look at authoritative sources I don't see them actually say that this was the first settlement (e.g. [1]). Has anybody seen an authoritative source that actually says this?

From what I read some sources make it sound like by the time Lafitte came to the island the settlement was actually rather developed (e.g. Aury's Maison Rouge mansion). But Aury only ruled the island a short time (a little over a year I think). So it seems hard to believe the island could have been that developed in the short time Aury was there. That suggests there was already some sort of town on the island (albeit certainly not a large one). The fact that the island was named Galveztown in the 1700s also would seem to imply that there was already a population there (could have been referring to the natives but that seems less likely).

Anyway, just wondering if anybody knows more about this ...

P.S. On a related note does anyone have sources which talk about the island between the time Lafitte left and the time the Mexicans/Texicans set up a port there? Many nonauthoritative sources make it sound like the island was completely deserted. But I don't think this is true. For example, Campbell's Bayou on the coast in what is now Texas City was founded by one of Lafitte's former commanders. The tidbits I have seen seem to imply the town there still existed. It seems that it was just Lafitte and those who chose to follow him that left. But I have not seen any details on that. Anybody have sources with more info? --Mcorazao (talk) 21:19, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Partially answering my own questions I found some non-authoritative sources which touch on a little of this.
  • [2] - Implies the island was crudely settled in the mid 1700s
  • [3]
  • [4]
  • [5] - This seems to indicate that, though there were Europeans who stayed there earlier, Aury's really was the first settlement that could be considered anything but a campground.

Initial comments[edit]

After a quick couple of read-throughs this article has the appearance of a good article: it appears to be well-referenced and well illustrated.

I will now do a more detailed check against WP:WIAGA, section by section, but leaving the WP:Lead until last. This might take a day or so; and during that time I will highlight below any "problems" that need to be addressed. Pyrotec (talk) 21:43, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I will respond to any problems or issues. Thanks, Postoak (talk) 21:57, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I found a few rather minor problems, which are mentioned below. In view of this I'm going straight to an overall summary.
  • Exploration and settlement' -
  • Ref 1 is a broken web link. (fixed Postoak (talk) 01:37, 7 December 2009 (UTC))[reply]
  • Notes -
  • Refs 26 & 32 refer to Hardwick (2002), but that citation is undefined.(fixed Postoak (talk) 01:37, 7 December 2009 (UTC))[reply]
