Past tense?[edit]

Is there a reason why this article is written in the past tense? Does the song no longer exist? I propose to change it to the present tense unless anyone objects --Gilgongo (talk) 19:21, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion about the Spanish Civil War[edit]

"... the idealism of volunteers from around the world who joined the International Brigade fighting Franco's military rebels against the Spanish Republic." This sentence is unclear. As someone who doesn't actually know anything about Spanish history or politics, I can't tell what it's referring to; fighting with or against Franco's military rebels? And "against the Spanish Republic" combined with the previous unclearness seems sort of like a double negative. I think. Ultimately, as someone who arrived here looking up the song, from reading this blurb, I can't tell if the song criticises or supports the "idealism of volunteers [etc]" (ie: it was misguided, it was a good thing, whatever). I agree that this is a poorly written sentence. I would propose changing it to read:

"The song was about the Spanish Civil War and the idealism of volunteers from around the world who joined the International Brigade, fighting with the Republicans against Franco's Nationalist military rebels."

Whether the song supports one side or the other is a matter of artistic interpretation, however, and should not be elucidated. --Gilgongo (talk) 19:19, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of Spanish Civil War Poster[edit]

A link to a picture of the poster which (presumably) inspired the title of this song was provided in the article with no information about its copyright license. I removed this link pending an investigation as to whether we would be able to put it here under an allowable license. However, I found that the image was licensed by The Imperial War Museum for "personal research and educational use." Wikipedia image licensing rules [forbid use of images] so licensed, so unless anyone has any better ideas, I have simply added a footnote that the poster can be seen in the museum. I would like to take this opportunity to say screw copyright and screw the copyright holder for preventing its use under a better license (the work was made over 60 years ago for crying out loud) - but that would endanger Wikipedia. --Gilgongo (talk) 21:06, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
