van Beek[edit]

While editing this article I found practically no info about W.E.A. van Beek - Vice-President of FMJD. However, there is Dr. Walter E.A. van Beek from Utrecht, Holland, who seems to be the same man. One more evidence for this is that W.E.A. van Beek (Vice-President of FMJD) lives in Utrecht according to information from the official site of FMJD. However, at this site there is also the telephone number of W.E.A. van Beek - Vice-President, which differs from one of Dr. W.E.A. van Beek from Utrecht University. Moreover, I'm not even sure whether W.E.A. van Beek works for Utrecht University. Some sources connect him with Tilburg University in Holland. In different sources it is also stated that the Dr. van Beek's expertise is connected with Africa. And at the official site of FMJD it is said that nowadays W.E.A. van Beek is not the Vice-President but the Representative of African Confederation in Managing Board. What games?[edit]

The article lists four games: "bridge, chess, draughts (checkers) and go". The WMSG web site lists three: bridge, chess, and go in one place, but five, bridge, (international) chess, go, draughts (apparently the French version, which is not normally called checkers), and Xiangqi in another. I was just about to edit the page to show that Xiangqi is a member of IMSA then realised that the source doesn't actually state this to be the case. ie:

I find it difficult to believe that Xiangqi is still not a member but [2] does state that it was not and their website hasn't been updated since and wxf.org is almost as bad for information

Four sports established the International Mind Sports Association and thus the Games. Five sports participated in the 1st World Mind Sports Games, October 2008 in Beijing.

2008wmsg.org implies that xiangqi was a host country selection for the 1st WMSG. Its webpage "The Games" concludes thus

: "it will be interesting to see if Xiangqi is represented in the 2012 games as well — or if we will see another game more appealing to the specific hosting nation."

WARNING: the evident homepage http://www.2008wmsg.org/ is exceptionally shoddy. I doubt that this site is reliable. --P64 (talk) 20:37, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Official presentation[edit]

Yesterday (at the WBF website?) I found an official IMSA "presentation", .pdf format that looks derived from powerpoint. It seems to cover the IMSA and WMSG mission and planning for the 1st WMSG.

Today I'm embarrassed to miss it. One place at wikipedia where I thought i saved the URL, in fact I duplicated another URL.

SportAccord Mind Games[edit]

I am puzzled, as to why SportAccord is going to start its own version of the Mind Games, compared to the first edition of the World Mind Games already in the history books. It is going to be interesting on which one of the two different Mind Games will be the one officially sanctioned by both SportAccord and the International Mind Sports Association. As this stage (spring or summer 2011) it seems to me that both Mind Games meetings are official. This one, perhaps annual or biennial?, is sponsored with cash prizes?, small invited or appointed fields?, and fast play, planning or hoping for live video?. The quadrennial World Mind Sports Games follow the Olympic Games model. —potentially vast fields of national representatives compete for medals—

TOP Samsung is the official sponsor of the SportAccord Mind Games and the electronic equipment will be provided by the electronics multi-national conglomerate. RADO of the Swatch Group, will be the official timekeeper of the Games too.

The stub article SportAccord World Mind Games was speedily deleted today. It wasn't new but I created a talk page only this weekend, which maybe triggered the process. This month I have linked it, concerning the 2011 inaugural Games, in the biographies of several bridge players who participated--perhaps 10 of 48 including all 6 members of the USA women team.

Poker[edit]

What is the current status of poker? User:... has just added poker to the lead sentence. We need documentation.

The IMSA homepage does not suggest that poker is a member sport, although it includes one link to a poker promotion. Regarding the December 2011 SportAccord WMG, its headlines show that bridge, chess, draughts, and go associations have submitted preliminary lists of players who will participate, and that xiangqi has been invited. So I've checked and it seems that Duplicate poker currently has observer status within the IMSA (see here). According to this source, the goal for Duplicate poker is to achieve full recognition by the 2012 World Mind Sports Games. Is it relevant to mention any of this in the article? It is now out of date. Recently some related articles have been split and updated; related categories revised. Everything under cat World Mind Sports Games is recently or soon or both in flux.
