Bishop or not?[edit]

There is no reference given for the source of J.H. Hamblen's election to the episcopacy (bishop) in the ME Church, South. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.55.81.128 (talk) 02:21, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • You are most likely correct. I could find no evidence supporting this claim some people often make when citing him. 207.238.52.162 (talk) 23:00, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First name[edit]

[From edit on Oct. 14, 2009] This was my great grandfather and his first name was James. One of his sons was John Henry Hamblen. --208.180.254.74

  • I have your great-grandfather's autobiography (assuming it's the same guy) at home and I'll be sure to check with it. All sources I have say "John Henry Hamblen," but the biography would be the best source. It's called "A Look Into Life." Let's talk -- I would love to learn more about your family. I have some recordings of Dr. Hamblen preaching if you're interested. 207.238.52.162 (talk) 23:00, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • As it turns out, his biography is silent on his first name, but the Hanbook of Texas' entry on Stuart Hamblen says it is James.75.63.4.161 (talk) 04:56, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Could it have been both?

In Reply to: Re: John Henry Hamblen by Richard Hamblen -- John Henry Hamblen (his original frst name was James) but he changed it to John. He was the 1/2 brother of Drusilla Hamblen Morris that married James Baxter Morris. John's book was "A look into life" and yes he did break away from the Methodist church but it is not now the United Meth, it is still the EMC and is based in Kansas city. Drusilla was born in IL in 1865 John A. Hamblen her brother was born in 1863. Drusilla is my g'grandmother. John (james)Henry Hamblen was born in Kaufman county Tx., in 1877 and his mother was a Matillda Johnson Gage Hamblen from Johnson Co., IL. John Henry was also his father's name and they ran away to TX., together. He died in 1924 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Van Zandt county TX., He was born in abt 1842 in Weakley, Co., TN and his father name was Joel Hamlin and his mother's name was Elizabeth Ratterree his son JH2 died in 1971 in Abilene, as a child I knew him well and the family called him Henry, when he prayed you knew he was talking directly to god. John A. and Drusilla's mother is not known for sure as he married a Malissa Harrell Cooper in 1866 after the 2 kids were born. Some say she was the mother but I doubt it. I have an old record that says that a Jane Coggin (or Coggins) was the mother but no proof. If you have any definitive info. please share. bggabby@charter.net (source: http://genforum.genealogy.com/hamblen/messages/163.html)
