This article has been checked against the following criteria for B-class status:
"Despite the familial ties to the leaders of the anti-Kantakouzenos faction, ..." It's the opposite: John Vatatzes had married his son to a daughter of Patriarch John XIV Kalekas and his daughter to a son of Alexios Apokaukos. Kalekas and Apokaukos were the leaders of the Kantakouzenos faction, so it has to be corrected as: "Because of the familial ties to the leaders of the Kantakouzenos faction, ..."
