More on John V. Van Pelt from Patchogue Library[edit]

When I wrote the article on Patchogue Post Office, I sent the link to the Patchogue-Medford Public Library's Local History Department, and the head of that department loved it, and sent me this info;

Incidentally John Van Pelt, had a friends in construction in Patchogue, ca. 1906 (fellow Cornellians) who urged him to submit the plan that was eventually selected, approved, and executed for the Carnegie Library at 10 Lake Street, dedicated 3/4/1908. His friends did the actual construction, and ran into cost overruns, which led to trouble with Carnegie's private secretary, through whom the negotiations were generally filtered. Once completed, the building served as the village library from 1908-81, with occasional repairs, internal reconfiguration, and one expansion. Then it became home to Briar Cliffe(sic) College's Patchogue Campus, until that moved to Swezey's new location, become a 4-year (rather than 2-year) college, after Swezey's Dept. Store folded. The Carnegie building is slated for demolition, when construction on the new hotel begins at the earlier Swezey's location. The front wall might be saved, but don't hold your breath. Now's the time to take digital photos of the exterior, if you want them.

Thanks for the info. This is very interesting. What a shame about its possible demolition or facadism (also known as facadicide). I wrote the article on Van Pelt because he was attached to the Joan D'Arc statue in Riverside Park and was an FAIA. Couldn't find much on him though, so this info would be great to include. Do you have a photo of the library? Perhaps this PV Library should be a seperate article. It is already included on several pages, so it would have a number of links, (List of Carnegie libraries in New York) and it would be good in the . The building would already be worthy of an article, and the additional reuses would be great. There should be a category for adaptively reused libraries or demolished libraries. Maybe a little extra publicity would help the building.----James R (talk) 28 February 2010

No, I don't have a picture, sorry. That letter was written to me on July 15, 2008. The last time I was there(December 2009), the old library building was still there. Maybe you can capture a picture of it. ----DanTD (talk) 15:17, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
