I live in the northern part of Alabama and have personally seen a joint snake cut into pieces and it did put itself back together. It took some time to do it, but my grandmother told me they were scarce and that I should watch it and I did. I have never witnessed the joint snake joining up with any kind of object, so I assume that this part of the story could be considered a legend, but the snake does or did exsist.
