earlier comments[edit]

The 1993 "Australia - The Rough Guide" talks about Tom Flannigan. I don't have a more recent version, so I don't know if this was a mistake that's been corrected. Anyway, is there a "right" spelling for the name? D.D. 11:44 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)


It's been spelt Flanagan every reputable place I've seen it. (Including the pub in Kalgoorlie named after him, for what it's worth.)

Largest City[edit]

There is no mention in the article of the single most impressive statistic relating to this city. Kalgoorlie Boulder occupies an area of more than 96000 sq Kms making it the largest city on earth.

Have removed the 'largest city' claim, anyone wishing to have the intricacies of the designation of a local government area, what it constitutes, and what a locality or townsite constitutes, please ask here, and this editor will try to explain. Good stuff, SatuSuro. Despite its name, the "City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder" is gazetted as an administrative division, not as a city. Possible the "City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder" can claim to be the largest local government area in the world - I don't know - but "Kalgoorlie" the city has no such claim. Despite its name, the "City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder" is gazetted as an administrative division, not as a city. Sorry, that's not correct. The Local Government Act 1995, section 2.4 specifies that each district must be a city, town or shire. Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a city under that legislation. 2 dot maps[edit]

Infobox added[edit]

I have added an "Australian city" infobox, to make this page consistent with entries for other Australian cities.

I did not see the previous dot map that was deleted, so do not know what it looked like. The one I have added is consistent with the one included in all the other Australian city infoboxes, and multiple dot maps appear on some other entries. So I do not feel that there is a problem with having two on this page. What do others think?

Also, the statistics I have included for "area" and "population density" are the ones found here: http://www.kalbould.wa.gov.au/SectionHome.asp?ID=93&MID=2

I suppose these are technically and officially correct, but would it be more appropriate to use statistics referring to the actually inhabited area that comprises the city, rather than the (huge) area occupied by the Shire but not necessarily inhabited?

I removed this Kalgoorlie is also the biggest constituency in the whole world. from the lead. The lead should only be a summary of facts within the article. This isnt mentioned anywhere with in the article and it needs a reference source.

The Italian parliament has a recognisably larger constituency region. It isnt the largest by registered voters many Australian electorates higher numbers. Firstly what I think is irrelevant as that would violate original research guidelines as I cant be used a verifiable reference. As previously state The Italian Parliament has 2 seats for South East Asian and Oceania region which encompasses the Kalgoorlie electoral region so that is larger. Federal Senate seats in Western Australia cover larger areas than Kalgoorlie. The question of size comes down to methodology used in measuring, a single line statement without reference in the lead which isnt supported within the article shouldnt be there. Your welcome to include it within the article supported by verifiable sources (see WP:Cite for whats needed) please also include something on the methodology used to measure the claim. Closer to home Division of Kalgoorlie is 2,295,354 sq km thats more the 95,000 sq km. Gnangarra

The sections only needed to have phones numbers added and we'd have an article to rival any publication the local Tourist bureau could provide. Kalgoorlie vs Kalgoorlie-Boulder[edit]

This page should be just about Kalgoorlie itself, shouldn't it? And Kalgoorlie is now just a suburb of K-B, right? A lot of stuff on this page seems to belong on the city page instead; I moved some of it, but more needs to be done. Debatable as to perception as to what is going on there - K is not just a suburb, no. In West Australian history boulder has never had primacy over kalgoorlie, nor does the city of K-B have primacy over K. Probably worth actually putting things on talk first - with reasons - before doing the move - giving other editors the chance to discuss - and even better putting it to the others in the project at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Western Australia - even if it is for them to agree - its one of the more iconic locations in western australian history - and not to be taken too lightly SatuSuro 07:47, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's confusing - City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a local government area. Just as we wouldn't say, to take a random example, Mukinbudin is simply a suburb of the Shire of Mukinbudin, and curiously Bunbury is conversely much, much larger than the City of Bunbury and includes parts of several neighbouring LGAs (Capel, Dardanup and Harvey) - this article should scope and cover the history, development, economy and growth of an urban centre and its metropolitan area. The City of... article should cover governance of the region and anything specifically attributable to the region which would not appear in either a higher-level (town) or lower-level (Goldfields-Esperance) article. In Kalgoorlie-Boulder this would mostly relate to the areas in Part B - i.e. "other" - than to those in the city that can amply be handled here.
Also, with the area and various other things - the area we use for all cities in Australia, with only two exceptions that I'm aware of, is the Statistical District on ABS for regional centres and the Statistical Division for capitals. The Statistical District is an area like so, and we use the same definitions for Bunbury and Geraldton, as well as most eastern states cities. Orderinchaos 11:22, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Updated the article to refer to Kalgoorlie-Boulder, as this is article is clearly referring to what is now Kalgoorlie-Boulder, a city in Western Australia, and not Kalgoorlie, a suburb within Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Irraneous name[edit]

Wikipedia should use the correct name for locations it lists. Kalgoorlie is not a city, it is a suburb. There exists a city called Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and is the name sake for the city council, the city for ABS purposes, the State Government classification of the city, and most importantly, all official material related to the city, so why are people so deadset on using the name of one of the suburbs as the cities identifier?

Can anyone provide any sources for the name "kalgoorlie" that are official in any sense? We should not use the colloquial name as the formal name for these types of places, Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the formal name that Wikipedia should recognise, not pretend Kalgoorlie is the formal name and Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a colloquial term for things the State, Local Council, and ABS recognize as Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Thank for that opinion. I agree, colloquial names should not be used. That is why Kalgoorlie-Boulders wikipedia page should be correctly named.

Article should be moved to suit the real name for location. Kalgoorlie-Boulder is universally accepted the correct name. No real sources that point to the Suburb of Kalgoorlie being the formal name beyond it's colliqually convenient shortening.
