There is one at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia. It is behind the geology and geography building. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.95.131.190 (talk) 05:39, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you see it on maps.google.com? Are there pictures of it? Jim1138 (talk) 05:50, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

More info[edit]

What about including some minor details, such as who invented these things, who made the first one, how the principle works, etc? And you're saying that the name translates into "ball-ball"? Very original, I'm sure. AnnaGoFast (talk) 16:22, 5 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Would be curious to figure out the German name for these things - Appears many were even made in Germany. Most certainly isn't "Kugelball"...Various attempts only result in stone spheres used as fountains or globes with fountain inside, etc. 81.102.111.206 (talk) 12:55, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Plaque on a fountain in Zurich (in German).

According to images posted on Commons, the German name is "Kugelbrunnen", which means "Ball fountain" ("Brunnen" has some other meanings, too). One image uses "Steinkugelbrunnen", "Stone ball fountain". German often casually produces noun compounds as spaceless compound words where English would probably produce a noun phrase. The existence of a compound word is therefore not evidence that the term has been used before. HLHJ (talk) 04:20, 27 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Article name[edit]

A Google search of "Kugel fountain" only returns 752 hits. "Kugel ball" returns 133,000 hits. Thus it seems that "Kugel ball" is more common than "Kugel fountain":

As "Kugel fountain" only returns 752 hits, I don't believe that it meets wp:COMMONNAME and should be changed. Either back to "Kugel ball", "Ball fountain", or "Sphere fountain".

Apologies for the inadequate move reason. I hit enter by mistake while writing it. I may have been too hasty; I'll give my reasoning, but I may not have picked the best name, and I'm open to other views.
"Kugel ball" is a pleonasm, translating as "Ball ball" (en, de), and I found it ambiguous. I thought that "Kugel fountain" (or even "Kugel ball fountain") would give a better impression of what the object is. I followed some links from the article, which did not use the term "Kugel ball". The sites I saw using "Kugel ball" were mostly Wikipedia duplicates, and thus not independent or reliable sources. I didn't look as throughly as I might have, and may have gotten a false impression.
"Sphere fountain" and "Ball fountain" were also used to describe fountains incorporating non-freely-turning spheres (water was pumped up through a sphere, or poured over some spheres, or whatever). "Floating ball fountain" seems inaccurate as the ball does not float, but it gives a vivid impression that will probably let the reader associate the name with the object, if they have seen one. "Aquaplaning fountain" is technically correct and unambiguous, and would encompass fountains involving a freely-turning cylinder, but I can't imagine that it's widely used. It seems that we have a choice of an inaccurate name, a problematic name, two ambiguous names, an uncommon name, and an uncommon and arguably pedantic name. It's a judgment call, and the judgment of the majority would probably be the best guide. I hope we get some response to you call for comments, and thank you for making it. One is missing[edit]

There is another Kugel fountain in italy, is in Carrara’s “Piazza d’armi” and it’s made with white marble, it’s 1.8 tons, made by Kenneth Davis in 1979. 95.237.8.140 (talk) 06:28, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, 95.237.8.140. I've added it; free free to look at what I did and add the next one yourself, anyone can edit! It still needs citations for the size and date. The sources cited don't have to be in English. If you can add sources, that would be great. HLHJ (talk) 00:15, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There is another one missing, in Werne, Germany. It has both a sphere and a ring, both spinning. [1] 51.66136544846729, 7.631982214228601 80.151.239.1 (talk) 12:54, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
