Title[edit]

Merkwürdig that the title of this article on English WP is in German. Sca (talk) 14:46, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees simply is the name of the company. There are other examples such as Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (German), Trasporti Pubblici Luganesi (Italian), or Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le lac Léman. Gestumblindi (talk) 20:00, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Natürlich, verstanden, but I believe that normally in the case of a utilitarian company name English WP would translate it, if for no other reason than English speakers will be unable to pronounce "Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees," and will not recognize "Vierwaldstättersee" as a name for what has long been known in English as Lake Lucerne. (I do read German, but most English speakers/readers don't.)
And BTW the article itself provides a loose translation in the first sentence, to "Lake Lucerne Navigation Company" (literally I guess it would be "Ship-journey Corporation"). Sca (talk) 21:44, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, same case - for example - in the article Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le lac Léman I mentioned above... Wikipedia:Naming conventions (companies) doesn't say anything specifically regarding the question whether non-English names of companies should be translated into English, or if there are particular cases when this should be done. The more general naming conventions for "Foreign names and anglicization" suggest to use the form that is most commonly used "in English language reliable sources". Most sources for the SGV are in German, of course. I also can't find an English name for the company at their own website, though they use English in the domain lakelucerne.ch ;-) - If there are quality English sources calling them "Lake Lucerne Navigation Company", I think I wouldn't be opposed to a move. Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des VierwaldstätterseesLake Lucerne Navigation Company – Per the discussion above, it's awkward to locate this article at the German title. The company itself uses "Lake Lucerne Navigation Company" on the English-language version of its official website: [1] (it's in the footer). Mackensen (talk) 02:33, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per WP:UE. 162 etc. (talk) 15:04, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm now neutral on this issue. In the 2014 discussion, I wrote "I also can't find an English name for the company at their own website", but now they seem indeed to use "Lake Lucerne Navigation Company" at least semi-officially, so I'm not opposed to moving this article.
