"Desai" belongs to Baniya (Vaishnav) community. not marathi

Fanofbollywood (talk) 01:02, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Desai is originally a Marathi title. Desai is a Marathi Brahmin surname not a Baniya. 103.171.7.115 (talk) 21:13, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Goan or Konkani![edit]

Many of the people on this list are Goans,or Konkani ethnicity which by no way can be called as Marathis even though they have been speakin marathi! Nijgoykar (talk) 16:05, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lata and Bhimsen[edit]

Lata Mangeshkar is of Goan Konkani origin... Bhimasen Joshi is Kannada Deshastha Brahmin... how can they be called Martahi? Nijgoykar (talk) 13:52, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Goan Konkani are ethnically Marathis. Joshi surname is not a Kannada surname. 103.171.7.115 (talk) 21:09, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

MERGER[edit]

I propose that List of people from Maharashtra be merged into this List of Marathi people. -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 12:53, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that a merger is highly desirable, however, since the text at the start of List of Marathi people asserts that the list relates to ethnicity and language rather than location, I would propose merging in the other direction. Determining whether someone has or has not lived in Maharashtra is a much easier test than whether they are truly Marathi or speak Marathi. I have long had concerns that the List of Marathati people has, to an outsider, vague racist connotations which are best avoided.  Velella  Velella Talk   14:25, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I too think that a proper scope should be mentioned. & the easier one to verify would always be from residence point of view. If that is agreed by all, the introduction of the page should clearly state it so. Also, if any criteria is finalized in this discussion, that should apply to every page included in Lists of Indians by state. Big job!! Should this be discussed on Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics as this page is quite hot as of now & they are too discussing (fighting) over classic territorial issues??? -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 14:59, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As this topic is applicable to many other articles too, please discuss it further on the Noticeboard for India related topics. -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 09:13, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GOCEreviewed[edit]

I've placed {{GOCEreviewed}} here and removed {{Copy edit}} from the article because the article has too many issues to be worth copy editing in its current form. Especially, proposals to merge, the inclusion of non-Marathi people and the issue of allegedly non-encyclopedic inclusions need to be addressed first. If anyone is interested in doing anything with it, the main need for copy editing would be in the punctuation. In particular, a comma is always followed by a space, and there is no comma between military ranks and names. For example, the line

  • Air Chief Marshal,Anil Tipnis,Chief of the Air Staff

should read

  • Air Chief Marshal Anil Tipnis, Chief of the Air Staff

Realty show winners section to be deleted[edit]

I think the list in the article is too long and serve no purpose to find out really 'notable' people. The entire sections like reality show winners and cricket players(except a few) should be deleted.

People of Goan origin[edit]

How can people of Goan origin be called as Marathi? there are lots of such names in the list. Nijgoykar (talk) 02:33, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Because Goans are ethnically Marathis. 103.171.7.115 (talk) 21:10, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
