Major page overhaul[edit]

I have recently completed a major overhaul of this page, including finding reliable sources, correcting erroneous information, and adding sort functions. I also merged all tables together, as this seems to be the way most lists are created now and the move allows for better searches through sorting. Since the changes took a lot of tinkering and I did not want to mess up the active version while I was still working, I made the new list on a personal subpage, which can be seen here.

Due to the extensive changes, I do not want to introduce the new version unexpectedly. I'm posting this notice to see if there are any editors who may have suggestions before the changes are implemented. Please let me know if there is a change that needs to be made within the next three days. If I haven't heard anything by the end of that timespan, I'll assume the page is good and will copy the new version over. Thanks! RunningTiger123 (talk) 01:25, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Since I haven't heard anything, I'll move the page over. Feel free to make any changes as you see fit. RunningTiger123 (talk) 23:22, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tables suggestion[edit]

Hello everyone, I recently made an edit creating subheadings for Major associations for "Emmy Awards", "Golden Globe Awards" and "Screen Actors Guild Awards". User:RunningTiger123 reverted the edits so I wanted to bring about a discussion. I feel like the way the table is now, it's incredibly hard to follow due to the exhaustive amount of awards it has received. I think having separate subheadings would make it cleaner and easier to read. Thoughts? The One I Left (talk) 12:55, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The general trend with these lists has been to put everything into a single table (see this 2020 FLC discussion for some history). In my opinion, the biggest advantage is that you can sort awards more usefully when everything is in a single table; for instance, if someone wants to find the awards Jon Hamm was nominated for on the show, or the awards the show won in its first year, they can sort that into a single place with the existing format, whereas it would be permanently split into different places using separate tables. I also think there is unnecessary subjectivity in calling certain groups "major associations"; why should we imply the Golden Globes and SAG Awards are more important than DGA, WGA, Peabody, ...? RunningTiger123 (talk) 14:57, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As a user the table is so large it's generally confusing especially with a lot of non-notable awards (Young Artists Award, Satellite Award, California On Location Award, etc) combined with notable ones (Emmy, Globe, SAG etc.) I think the there could be a discussion to add a subheadings for the guild awards. But with the Emmy Awards it would be nice to have a separate section so you can easily see the years and categories the show won for. Also the table does not include the episodes which the actor was nominated for re: Emmys. Just the rowspans of "Mad Men" doesn't seem helpful. The One I Left (talk) 15:10, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All of the awards are notable – they all have their own articles, or at least articles for the presenting organization. I personally think that the less confusing option with a long list is to use alphabetical order instead of splitting only a few sections out and making readers guess where an award is (yes, the TOC would list them, but you'd still have to search the TOC instead of just scrolling to the correct letter).
Regarding Emmy episode nominations, while performers submit episodes to support their nominations, the Television Academy doesn't list them (presumably because the performers are meant to be recognized for their overall performance) – compare a performing ballot to a directing ballot. While separate outlets may list the episodes, I think we should stick to the official nominations info. RunningTiger123 (talk) 15:37, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I like the compromise of alphabetical order! That would clear up the bulkiness for me. I think notability is nuanced but I think there is a distinction between Emmy Awards say a Satellite Award. No movie trailer will read "Satellite Award winner" or will have that information in their bio or obit. The One I Left (talk) 15:41, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear, I'm not saying the table should be split into separate tables by award in alphabetical order, I'm saying the table should remain as it is with the award in the first column sorted by alphabetical order. RunningTiger123 (talk) 16:03, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh then I still disagree. I really don't like all the awards bulked up into one box. It's too unweildy and hard to view. I'd prefer separate tables. The One I Left (talk) 16:18, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
