Untitled[edit]

I will create a location map for the area of the Lochsa drainage this weekend and post it. I will be searching for historical photos (possibly USGS) as well as current photos. If I cannot get access to usable (copyright free) photos, I will take some early next year. I love road trips. Robbie Giles 00:16, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photos, ideas[edit]

I visited the Lochsa last week and took many photos, some of which might be suitable for this article. I have some other ideas as well.

I'd like to add a River Geobox to the upper right-hand corner. It has parameters for a lot of different things related to rivers. See Willamette River for an example of how these look. Some of the data such as the coordinates can come from the USGS page already cited in the article. Other data might come from the NOAA station at Lowell.
The statement that "There are no services (food, gasoline, or lodging) for the 84 miles (135 km) between Lowell and Lolo Hot Springs, Montana, 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Lolo Pass in Powell Idaho" is no longer true. Lochsa Lodge at Powell offers food, gasoline, and lodging.
Ralph S. Space, a former supervisor of the Clearwater National Forest, says in his book, The Lolo Trail, that "Lochsa is a Flathead word meaning rough water". The Flatheads came west over Lolo Pass to fish for salmon in what became Idaho; the Nez Perce went east over the pass to hunt buffalo in Montana. I have a copy of the second edition of Space's book, published in 2001, as well as a copy of Bud Moore's book, The Lochsa Story, mentioned already in this article.
I bought one Forest Service topo map at the Powell Ranger Station but didn't want to buy the many others needed to show the whole river. The map I have shows the first three miles or so, and it includes river-mile markers. The marker at the confluence of the Crooked Fork and Colt Killed Creek, which join to form the Lochsa, is 70.1, and I think that must be the Lochsa's actual length.
