District of Yerevan?[edit]

Bangladesh isn't a district of Yerevan. It isn't even mentioned on Yerevan's page. It's a colloquial term - the district's actual name is Malatia Sebastia - [1].

Ridiculous.

Insulting district[edit]

As a Bangladeshi, i feel immensely offended seeing this and this is seriously erasing some of the respect i had for Armenia. Bangladesh may have a huge population uder poverty but it also the country with the fastest rate of reducing poverty and making some of the fastest progress in education, women empowerment and healthcare, as stated by the United Nations. Bangladesh is also listed as one of the Next Eleven economies of the world.

Plus we even have connections with Armenians historically as well, there was a once vibrant Armenian community in Dhaka and their buldings, churches and cemetaries are preserved today by the Bangladesh government. Areminian merchants use to come to Bengal for centuries and Armenians also contributed heavily in the development of Dhaka.

And besides, both our nations have one thing in common. Genocide and the absence of justice. Armenia suffered hugely during the Armenian genocide but the turks still dont live to the crime. Well simalarly, 3 million Bengalis were killed during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 (fifth largest genocide of the past century) and the country which carried it out, is yet to offer its apologies and try those responsible.--ChaudhryAzan (talk) 20:39, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Chaudhry Azaan,
I am not sure who placed that text in this article, but I have corrected it. The reason that this district of Yerevan is called Bangladesh is not due to its purported high levels of poverty (poverty is much the same in Yerevan in all of its districts, except perhaps the center). Rather, the name derives from the fact that the district is so far away (relatively speaking compared to the other districts) from the central district of Yerevan. "Bangladesh," here, is a place holder for a place far away, further away than India. My sincere apologies for any offense you suffered as a result of the incorrect text; the original author had no idea what he was talking about... Serouj (talk) 22:17, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
