misinterpretation of sources

The sources regarding Malayadvipa don't say anything about the etymology of Melayu. The sources provide only, which name was used by Indians to refer to Malaysia. I've corrected the errors.--Dravidianhero (talk) 15:58, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

The current reference to Malaysia as a centre of Islamic banking does nothing to qualify the statement or cite reference for it. Please change "The country has developed into a centre of Islamic banking, and is the country with the highest numbers(sic) of female workers in that industry." to "The country has developed into a centre of Islamic banking, with one of the largest sharia compliant assets in the world, and is the country with the highest number of female workers in that industry."

Freedom of religion

Twice it is mentioned that the Constitution of Malaysia guarantees freedom of religion, once in the 3rd paragraph of the introduction, and again in section 9.1 . Freedom of religion is generally recognized also to include the freedom to change religion or not to follow any religion. The freedom to leave or discontinue membership in a religion or religious group —in religious terms called "apostasy" — is also a fundamental part of religious freedom, covered by Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [1]. The Constitution doesn't guarantee this for Muslims in Malaysia, since Article 3 states that States may create Syariah courts to adjudicate over Muslims in respect of State Islamic laws [2]. Hence, there have been several cases where Muslims were not allowed to change religion [3], [4]. Therefor, it cannot be said that the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion for Muslims in Malaysia, and I request this exception to be specified at both places. Andre.Koster (talk) 03:17, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure if this is the right place to go in to such a level of detail but in any case, I don't think this is as simple as you think.
As with any constitutional issue in any country, the precise intepretation matters quite a lot. As you've hinted at, the constitution both guarantees freedom of religion and allows the establishment of Syariah courts so the question of how these interact is important. Generally speaking, in recent times the Federal courts have usually and controversially deferred to the Syariah courts when the issue of the interaction of constitutional guarantees vs Syariah law has come up. However there's nothing in the constitution I'm aware of that forces this.
In the particular example you refer to, it's easy to see there is another obvious intepretation. Since freedom of religion is guaranteed, if this is intepreted as to include the right to choose religion or to not follow any religion in accordance to international norms, and since Syariah courts only have jurisdiction over Muslims, if someone does not consider themselves Muslim, Syariah courts do not have jurisdiction over this person. Therefore the issue of "apostasy" is basically irrelevant. (Of course there are obvious issues surrounding those who do consider themselves Muslim, but don't adhere to the specific Sunni faith system in Malaysia although there's no particular reason the federal courts couldn't rule in a similar manner to someone who doesn't claim to be Muslim at all, i.e. the Syariah courts have no jurisdiction over this person.)
The fact that the Federal courts have not generally intepreted the constitution in this manner doesn't change the possibility that the two parts can be reconciled in a manner consistent with international norms. In other words, this is more of an intepretational issue than a written one. (It's only a written one in so much the constitution doesn't clearly specify that the Syariah courts do not have jurisdiction over someone who is not Muslim regardless of whether that person may have once been so or some official documents says that person is. But this sort of thing is hardly uncommon and constitutions rarely go in to that level of details.) And it's not even that simple since the courts have sometimes issued what seems to be contradictory opinions.
Note that in recent times, this issue has often also came up when someone is for some reason identified as Muslim by someone in government but either that person or their family (after their death) argues they never identified as Muslim.
A more clearcut issue IMO is Article 160 of the Constitution of Malaysia which effectively requires someone to be Muslim to be Malay. Note that unlike the previous example, in this example there seems to be a clear cut contradiction in the constitution itself whereas I've explained, it's not clear that there's a contradiction in the previous example. Of course, some would argue provided the person is actually allowed to convert, the person has freedom of religion since there's no reason why a ethnic group can't be defined to require a certain religion. But since there is special recognition coming from part of that group, there are obvious questions over why religion is an integral part of that group which is about native rights. There are also other related issues here, for example, someone can became a Bumiputera (Malaysia) by becoming a Malay which includes embracing Islam, but embracing the traditional religious beliefs of other Bumiputera will get you no where. (Or a Bumiputera who is not a Muslim and embraces Islam will still be a Bumiputera. A Malay who embraces the traditional religious beliefs of some other Bumiputera group will cease to be a Bumiputera.)
And there are other issues, e.g. the restrictions on propogating other religions to Muslims in article 11(4), marriage between a Muslim and non Muslimn, freedom for religious materials not directed at Muslims but which are alleged to be problematic for various reasons such as the use of the word Allah or insulting a prophet etc etc. And some would consider having an official religion itself (which we obviously do mention) is inherently contradictory with having freedom of religion.
Either way, considering the complexity of the issues here, and that this is an article on the country I'm not sure whether we can cover much more. And either way we do need reliable sources which actual cover the complicated issues (not reliable sources simply covering specific cases). Note that the article already mentions Syariah courts and their handling apostasy and religious conversion and has since before you posted [1]. I would note Freedom of religion in Malaysia appears to be one of the better articles on Malaysia in wikipedia.

Image glut

Lately there've been numerous image changes and additions to this article. As it stands, in part they're overwhelming the text. The second image in history, of the marching parade, on my screen flows into the next section, and it doesn't really aid understanding of anything. Foreign relations and military currently has 4 images, none of which give any understanding that would be reached without them, and three of which are generic military images that have been shrunk to a point where little detail can be seen. The Geography section has 3 scrunched up images, two of which are simply pretty landscapes, the third of which is more infrastructure than anything geographical. Wildlife has gone so far that it has an oddly formatted gallery. Infrastructure has two small pictures squishing all the text between them. And so on through the article. The article as it stands doesn't comply with WP:MOSIMAGES at all. We should really be looking for one or two pictures per second, and ones that actually aid a reader's understanding. The pie charts and maps for example, seem helpful. On the other hand, the image of a sign in languages where the text can't even be seen is not. Are they any opinions on which images should be kept, or replacements suggestions? CMD (talk) 18:28, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

References to press freedom

Malaysia's press freedom ranking has now dropped to 147, behind even the nanny-state of Singapore. I presume then that any reference to this in this article will be removed by those guilty of the same mealy-mouthed equivocation that has produced a mere two paragraphs in the whole article about the deplorable lack of press freedom within this country. GA check

I am working my way through the Good articles listed at Places; having a quick look to see if they still meet the Good article criteria. I have landed on this article. After I've had a quick look, I'll leave a note here indicating if I have concerns or not.

In general, I see the process as this: 1) Give the article a quick look to see if there are obvious issues: maintenance tags, unsourced sections, excessive media, etc, resolving any minor issues as I do so; 2) If I have concerns, open a GAR to see how serious those concerns are, resolving them myself if they are not serious; 3) If during the GAR I feel that there is significant work to be done (more than I can or am willing to do myself), I will put the GAR on hold and notify the main contributors.

My aim and intention is to keep the article listed - I would rather the article was improved and kept listed than the article is delisted. Where a delisting seems likely due to the amount or nature of work needed being greater than I am able to do alone, and the main contributors are unavailable or unable for whatever reason to do the work, then appropriate WikiProjects will be notified at least seven days before a delisting would take place. SilkTork ✔Tea time 21:46, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Green tickYArticle appears fine. It provides a good overview of the subject in a concise and readable form - it is 52 kB (8281 words) of readable prose, which for the range and depth of the subject is doing well. Areas that need thinking about for ongoing development are the amount and choice of images. This is a general article about the whole of the country, yet we have seven images for the Biodiversity section (awkward title, Wildlife is more reader friendly, and the title commonly used on Wikipedia), which seems disproportionate. See WP:IMAGE RELEVANCE which advises against using multiple similar images, I would suggest the national animal, and the national flower, and perhaps also the official mascot would be relevant, the rest are starting to swamp and domiante the article. The sub-sections in the Biodiversity section create a cluttered feel. MOS:BODY has this advice: "Very short or very long sections and subsections in an article look cluttered and inhibit the flow of the prose." The section can be formatted using ; instead of === to create softer headings, and ease flow when reading. SilkTork ✔Tea time 08:17, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

Second, the first paragraph reference to 'the structure of government' and 'social contract theory' as reasons that minorities have not been assimilated seems preposterous (I'm a political philosopher with a graduate degree in this subject from Oxford).

Malaysia(English,Malay) 马来西亚(Simplified Chinese)

I would like to add the Chinese name of Malaysia on the article. As a Chinese Malaysia, we are allowing and studying Chinese in Malaysia, and it was sad when I am looking this page because there is no Chinese on it but Singapore and Brunei do it!! It's unfair for our nation even our government are also using Chinese on our nation slogan and using a one of the sign language.

Oh yeah, could you change the word " Recognized: English " to "Second official language or Second language: English". This is because English is widely spoken and using in Malaysian life, also our constitution 'The Malaysian Act' have allowed English used as one of the official language in Malaysia.

Thanks

EricSu112233 (talk) 16:38, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Chinese is not an official language of Malaysia. English has a role, but is clearly contrasted with the "national language" of Malay. Due to this, I think "Recognised" is the best formulation as it notes an official status but doesn't place it at the same rank as Malay. That said, "Second language" is an interesting alternative. CMD (talk) 10:50, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Etymology

I have added below info in etymology section. The previous one is more into describing the origin of Melayu term, not the term 'Malaysia' itself specifically.

  • The name 'Malaysia' is a combination of the word Malay and the Latin/Greek suffix -sia/-σία.[1]
  • In modern terminology, "Malay" is the name of an ethnoreligious group of Austronesian people predominantly inhabiting the Malay peninsula and portions of adjacent islands of Southeast Asia, including the east coast of Sumatra, the coast of Borneo, and smaller islands that lie between these areas.[2]
  • The origins of the word Melayu ('Malay') itself are disputed. Among notable theories are, it is derived from the Sungai Melayu ('Melayu river') in Sumatra,[3] from the Melayu Kingdom, a classical kingdom that existed in the 7th century Sumatra.
  • In 19th century, the concept of "Malay race" was first propagated by European scholars, in referring to all natives of Maritime Southeast Asia or Austronesians as a whole. A number of derivations from this anachronistic concept was later introduced, among others were the terms "Malay Archipelago"[4] as well as "Malaysia" itself.

The etymology section should at least addresses the following subjects which i have summarised. For those who have their own alternatives, including Mr. CMD, you are free to present your own understanding on this. Instead of messing the section with your own POV, lets us discuss it here to find solutions:
  • The etymological origin of the word Melayu:
Malay/Javanese words Melayu/Mlayu (to steadily accelerate or to run)-->Sungai Melayu (Melayu river) -->Kerajaan Melayu (7th century)-->Melayu (15th century) a.k.a "Malayos" or "Malay" by Europeans.
  • Etymological origin of Malaysia
Malay (Oxford Dict: Originates from Malay word "Malayu")(Merriam-Webster: Originates from obsolete Dutch Malayo, itself from Malay word "Melayu"), first known use 1598-->Malay race (1795 concept by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach)-->Malay+sia = Malaysia (1826 term coined by Jules Dumont d'Urville)
  • Toponym history of Malaysia
Tanah Melayu (15th century)-->Malaya (1906) (English rendition of "Tanah Melayu")-->Tanah Melayu/Malaya (1948)->Malaysia (1963)

Ø:G (talk) 03:36, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

This is very simple. The word "Melayu" is not an etymological origin for the word "Melayu". The word "Melayu" is the word "Melayu". The meaning of that word may change, but that does not explain the origin of the original word. CMD (talk) 19:37, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
Melayu/Melaju is derived from the word "layu/laju". The "layu/laju" means "steadily accelerate or run", thus with the prefix "me" added to the words, it give the meaning "to steadily accelerate or to run". You don't provide the complete chronological order of its origin from the claimed "Malaiyur" here, because i believe it doesn't has one. The "Malaiyur" is stucked there, has no continuity and has no chronological link in history. Melayu from the Me+Laju/Me+Layu, on the other hand, has a complete chronological order in history:
Malay/Javanese words Melayu/Mlayu (to steadily accelerate or to run)-->Sungai Melayu (Melayu river) -->Kerajaan Melayu (7th century)-->Melayu (15th century) a.k.a "Malayos" or "Malay" by Europeans.Ø:G (talk) 01:54, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
Hey look, information which you've never actually mentioned before. Why don't you provide a source that notes this? That is actually an etymological origin, rather than what you've already been postulating. As for the Malaiyur theory, presumably the chronological origin is that it became applied to the people of whatever land was being discussed. If you can present sources noting the layu/laju origin, then that can be added in. I tend to agree it's a very likely theory actually, so I'd have no objections to placing it first. Furthermore, if you can show an academic consensus that the Tamil/Indian theory is incorrect, then at that point it can be noted as so or removed. Do you have a source that backs this statement? CMD (talk) 16:51, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
The existence of Latin words ending in sia and Greek words ending in σία does not imply a "Latin/Greek suffix -sia/-σία", unless that means "a suffix to make a word look more classicalish". Reading between the lines I would guess that the sia was arbitrarily derived from nearby coined names in –nesia (from Greek nēsoi ‘islands’). —Tamfang (talk) 00:42, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
I have an earlier edition (1987) of Adrian Room's book, which says nothing about the 'suffix'. I wonder where he got that idea. —Tamfang (talk) 18:43, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Yes this is incorrect. The sia does mean islands in Greek, thus Malay islands makes no sense at least as it pertains to peninsular Malaya. Rather the SI was added to denote Singapore, when the union of Malaya and Singapore occurred. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.217.187.16 (talk) 08:52, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Should malaysia be classified as a semi-republic?

I know that republics are usually "countries without a monarchy". But judging by the fixed term the Malaysia Head of State has, malaysia, at least on the federal level, is not a full monarchy. Therefore, I believe that malaysia is a Semi-Republic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Glide08 (talkcontribs) 08:39, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Media upload of historical photographs of Malaysia

Dear editors,

I would like to draw your attention to a media upload that may be of relevance to this page:

The Temminck Groll Collection consists of 2,641 historical photographs taken by the Dutch architect and architectural historian Coen Temminck Groll (1925-2015). The photos were taken in regions with which the Dutch have had historical relations, including countries in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia (see the category description for a full listing). The photos were taken during Temminck Groll's travels and study of 'shared cultural heritage' (heritage of the Netherlands located outside the country’s borders) and mainly date to the 1960s and 1970s. The photographs were digitised by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and made available to Wikimedia Commons in the context of the project The Netherlands and the world. If you have any questions about this upload, or have other media requests regarding Dutch shared cultural heritage, don't hesitate to leave a message at the project page!

Kind regards, --AWossink (talk) 14:51, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Secular - 3rd June 2017

In section: Religion

Edit: Malaysia declares Islam as the state religion; the Constitution of Malaysia guarantees freedom of religion and conscience.[1] According to the Population and Housing Census 2010 figures, ethnicity and religious beliefs correlate highly.

Reason: Despite it being said that Malaysia is a secular state repetitively, Malaysia was never a secular state. In the Federal Constitution of Malaysia, it was never said that Malaysia is a secular state and because Secular means separating religion from the government (as said by George Jacob Holyoake in his book, The Principles of Secularism), it is impossible for Malaysia to be a secular state when Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia says that "Islam is the religion of the Federation". 175.144.129.186 (talk) 04:12, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Lead is strong

I often grab large chunks of Wikipedia leads for my own notes, usually thinning substantially according to my own specific interests.

This is time-consuming up front, and therefore a source of constant personal friction: "do I really need to whack this down so much?" I am always asking myself in the moment. From a higher vantage point, when I'm not mired in the irritation of actually doing this, I think this practice of mine does ultimately pay off.

As a result of this tension, I certainly notice when a lead requires less hasty redaction than normal. This lead is very well organized, clear and comprehensive, and is very easy to follow at any reading speed.

Well done to the editors involved. — MaxEnt 13:02, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Should the Deputy Prime Minister be added into Infobox?

According to the Federal Constitution of Malaysia, the federal government of Malaysia adopts the principle of separation of powers, which means that the federal government seperated powers into three branches: executive, legislature and judiciary [3]. Each branch has it's leader which is the Prime MinisterDeputy minister(leader of executive), Chief Justice (leader of judiciary), President of the Dewan Negara and Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat (leaders of legislature), and all of them are under the Monarch (or the Supreme Head), which is His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Seperation of Powers

For my understanding, this part (Infobox) is restricted to the leader of Legislative, Executive, Judiciary and State, not their deputy or assistant. So the Infobox just need to add His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (supreme head of the state), Prime Minister (leader of executive), Chief Justice (leader of judiciary), President of the Dewan Negara and Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat (leaders of legislature). But User:Engku1973 and User:English1780 (probable the second account of User:Engku1973) keep adding the Deputy Prime Minister into Infobox.

For User:Engku1973's reasons, he/she said the Deputy Prime Minister should be added into Infobox because she will serve as acting Prime Minister when Prime Minister is absent. Moreover, he/she said that the Deputy Prime Minister is like number two in cabinet and government and it will be very rude if I remove the Deputy Prime Minister from the Infobox. [4] [5]

So, based on his reasons: Should His Royal Highness Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan Agong (which is the Deputy Supreme Head of Malaysia) also be added into Infobox? Because His Royal Highness will exercises the functions of the head of state during the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's absence. The Deputy President of the Dewan Negara and the Deputy Speakers of the Dewan Rakyat will also exercises the functions of the President of Dewan Negara and Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat during the President/Speaker's absence. Why don't add them together into Infobox?

If no, so why the Deputy Prime Minister be added into Infobox? IOS314 (talk) 19:11, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Confusing

I have undertaken research, without billing Wikipedia my usual rate, to sort this out. The 2nd sentence (as of the date and time you can find stamped on this edit) says there are 13 "states". The 2nd-to-last sentence of the third paragraph states that the Monarch is elected by "the nine Malay states". I have pieced it together by my uncompensated labors that one of the nine "Malay States" and one of the 13 "States" are not the same thing, but I wished you made that definition clear FOR me without making me do the work. Actually, NO, I did NOT figure it out. Of the 13 "States", 11 are on the Malay Peninsula, so, upon review, I have NO IDEA why only 9 the 13 States are called "Malay States", whose "rulers" can become Monarch of Malaysia, and why four states' "rulers" are not eligible to become Monarch of Malaysia. I give up, and curse Wikipedia's name yet again. A pox, nay, a Malayse, be upon thee.2604:2000:1383:8B0B:103:D4DB:AD9A:6C92 (talk) 22:41, 9 August 2020 (UTC)Christopher L. Simpson

Malaysia is undergoing a political crisis where the position of the Prime Minister is currently being disputed since few weeks ago, with the Parliament sessions being disrupted in the last session. This is a tyranny which did not happen in the history of Malaysia. Anyone can just try to google the keywords: "muhyiddin, malaysia" and there are plentiful of news about it.

Here is a link to a comment article published TODAY: https://www.malaysiakini.com/columns/586958

Therefore, I am trying to update the infobox but it has already been reverted for the second time. I am NOT vandalising the page and I also do not wish to start an edit war.

Official Language in Malaysia is Malay not Malaysian. Malayan Law (talk) 06:47, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

Both names have been used for the standard, please see the language section. CMD (talk) 07:13, 19 November 2021 (UTC).
Follow the Malaysia Federal Constitution, not the netizen's standard. Kititto (talk) 02:27, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

I from Malaysia, I know that both is use but "malaysian" is not official name, according to malaysia government official name is Malay & malaysian is not official name https://www.malaysia.gov.my/portal/content/30118, Malaysian is only using for some Malaysian citizen not official use for education at Malaysia. Malayan Law

According to Malaysian language: "The Malaysian language (Malay: bahasa Malaysia) [...] is the name regularly applied to the standardized form of Malay language used in Malaysia (as opposed to the variety used in Indonesia, which is referred to as the "Indonesian" language). "Malay language" is Malay language, never refer to any other language, no matter how it evolve throughout historical timeline. Kititto (talk) 02:30, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Population needs to be updated with the latest 2020 census stats

2020 census was released last month by Department of Statistics Malaysia, thought we might need to edit the population. Don't have the link to the census right now but it should be on DOSM's website through their E-Statistik portal (that you need to register; only Malaysian citizens can). Same needs to be done for other Malaysian city/town/district/place article too. Wikipedia Bahasa Melayu editors take note too. Fazley01 (talk) 08:05, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Description of capital(s) of Malaysia

Should Kuala Lumpur also be described as the "constitutional" capital, in the infobox? According to the Constitution of Malaysia and according to the article describing Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur is the sole constitutionally-enshrined capital. (i.e. I'm suggesting that the text be something like "Kuala Lumpur (ceremonial, constitutional and legislative)). Aplaice (talk) 19:24, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

It would be good to have a source with similar descriptions. None were added when these labels were applied, and I'm unconvinced Putrajaya should be placed higher in the infobox. CMD (talk) 07:21, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Still GA Class?

How is this article GA class? I'm trying to fix a few issues. But its marred by many issues; many sections are less sourced, many too large, almost the entirety of the article has old data etc. Stuntneare (talk) 11:12, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

It's GA class because it was previously evaluated as such. I would be interested to know which sections you feel are too large, as the article as a whole is 58kb, which while long, is within guidelines. Old data is a common issue. Regarding your edits, I have not looked through them all, but is the removed information present on subpages? Also unsure where some of the claims of repetition come from, eg. the borders don't seem to be elsewhere in the body. CMD (talk) 11:21, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
@Chipmunkdavis: The bulk of the article's sources date all the way back to 2011. That's over a decade ago. I trimmed off some excess from a few sections, and split two new sections from the demographics section: health and education. Government and politics and the biodiversity section are definitely very large.
I am not sure about the trimmed data being present in sub-sections, although most of them were a decade-old. About the repetition, I removed a few sentences from the Geography section, as they were already stated in the lead. Secondly, I removed a sentence from the government and politics section, due to it being present in the history section. There is also some recentism in the last para of the history section. The entire economy section is very ill-sourced. Stuntneare (talk) 11:37, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
There shouldn't be anything in the lead that isn't in the article body, the lead is meant to be pure repetition. If you're looking to make the article shorter, splitting subsections is a bad idea, as split sections invite expansion. Would you mind checking subarticles before removing information, to make sure it is present at the level it is due? CMD (talk) 11:43, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

In recent changes, I remain unconvinced by the separation of a human rights subsection from the governance subsection. Twice so far some material has moved back, which shows how the material in question is entwined with the wider picture, and the current section still delves into direct political implications such as the Anwar trials. Even with this material, the section is very short. Given the opening statement of this discussion on overly long sections, creating a new short subsection seems like a backwards step given short subsections tend to be magnets for expansion. CMD (talk) 13:18, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Topics such as LGBT, capital punishment and human/sexual trafficking aren't really related to how the government functions. It's important that a distinction is made so as to provide a more coherent means of understanding about where the country stands in or has acted for such topics. I'm not really opposed to dropping Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trials, but it has to be stated that they have been widely internationally known and notable outside of Malaysia due to the amount of accusations, convictions and jail terms he faced stretching for more than two decades all because he is a reformist, with responses and strong criticism by various human rights organizations about the motivations behind them. Homosexuality being illegal is what got Anwar into all these in the first place, which is a human rights issue. CaoNgo (talk) 19:29, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
What got Anwar into all this trouble was not homosexuality, but politics, as evidenced by that wikilink, which is a clear example of how these topics relate to the broader Politics section. Politics is not exclusively refined to just government function, if it the section would be greatly stripped down. CMD (talk) 01:41, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
Yes it was political. However, in the eyes of the Malaysian government, police and prosecutors, it was homosexuality. They had to find a reason to convict him, and they chose that. As a result, he was indirectly imprisoned for political means, which is why it wasn't surprising that he was released from prison only after UMNO lost the 2018 general election. They are intertwined, the rights of homosexuality in Malaysia and its usage for political means when need be comes under the umbrella of human rights. This is why it's a subsection of government and politics and not its own section. CaoNgo (talk) 02:15, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
Lots of things come under the umbrella of human rights, that doesn't mean there should be a subsection. CMD (talk) 02:23, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
