pics and sound excerpts

I've recently managed to download a good number of songs by various artists, so we'll have some sound samples as soon as I get around to doing it (maybe today). It'd be nice to have some ethnomusicological folk recordings, but the Library of Congress is the only place I know of to have pd folk collections and they have nothing from Nigeria ([1]) that I can find. Pics are more difficult -- I've sent e-mails out to a bunch of different sites asking for permission to use their images, but haven't gotten any positive responses yet. Great! I've pasted in an exchange from Brian Smithson's page: Hi Brian—I noticed your comments on the peer review of this article. I've copy edited it, but it's in desperate need of images. Hi, Tony. It sounds like the author has contacted a number of website owners with no success. My next suggestion would be to try Nigeria-related discussion groups to request some images. It appears there are several active ones at Yahoo Groups: Nigeria-Planet, net-nigeria, Nigeria-volunteers, and Nigeria_opportunities (and I only checked the first 75 "Nigeria" search results). A search for "Nigeria music" yields a few others: SaharaSouth, naijaonline, Musicologicalcolleagues, Ndi-Igbo, Omo-Oduduwa, and LCGChoir.
Another thought is to contact Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) from Nigeria. One of Peace Corps's three goals is to increase knowledge of the host culture in the rest of the world, something Wikipedia does quite well. You might try The Peace Corps Nigeria Alumni Foundation, The Friends of Nigeria, or Afropop Worldwide (the latter seems to have Peace Corps sympathies).
In addition, I could provide another fair-use album cover (of Danfo Drivers, a reggae group), or a fair-use screenshot of the Danfo Drivers VCD. The rest of my collection is Cameroonian, though. Amcaja 17:52, 10 September 2005 (UTC)
- That's some good ideas. I've sent off a couple e-mails and posted to a few Yahoo groups, so we'll see what comes of it. I've also uploaded some music samples (all popular music, though) -- if worst comes to worst, it might be able to sqeak through WP:FAC with sounds even if the images are all fair use. - Brian, thanks hugely for that information—what a valuable source you are! Tuf-kat, maybe it will qualify, maybe it won't. If not, it's worth working on and resubmitting. Tuf-kat, well done getting music examples, although the symbols are question marks at the moment. Also, I wonder whether it's possible to distribute them through the article, so the each example is immediately accessible to readers as they move through the associated text? Which symbols are still question marks? Do you mean the links to the samples are broken? I don't think I agree it needs to be trimmed -- at 44k with the images and links and footnotes, that's not bad at all. It can't really get much bigger, but I think it's fine now. Well done! It's important to let the readers hear how later Nigerian pop styles owed something to their traditional roots. Please consider rationing the use of sound extracts to illustrate just the most important trends in pop styles, and the most characterful at that. It may be possible to get help from an administrator or bureaucrat; it's a matter of finding someone who know about the tech stuff, and who's willing to offer advice. I'm going to need similar advice soon on the uploading of sound files for various composer articles. Tony 02:44, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

TUF-KAT — you might want to check the Yahoo! Groups you posted to if you haven't already. I think you got some bites. I saw at least one response, this one in the Musicologicalcolleagues group, if I remember correctly. (Unfortuntely, such groups are blocked to me at work, so I can't check to make sure.) I didn't see any responses, but then in musicologicalcolleagues, I don't even see the original message I left. Nigerian links

This is an amazing article! But can I ask why both links by User:Nigeriamajor were cut? One is a re-direct, but the other really does have downloads of Nigerian music, as played on radio stations in Nigeria. I know the mass-addition looked like link spamming, but in this case I feel one of the links has merit and should go under "Further reading". Doesn't just deleting like that come under biting the newbies? JackyR 21:41, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

I reverted because it was a dishonest addition to put those links under "References", since they weren't references. If you think one is useful, go ahead and add it in appropriately ("External links", I think, not "Further reading", since it's not a written thing). Tuf-Kat 22:01, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

More reverts

Er, what's going on here? New, apparently good, info was added (perhaps not in a good place) and it has been removed with a simple "revert". Is there some possessiveness going on here? I can understand that editors who have put a lot of work into this excellent article may feel that new additions spoil the pristine perfection of their creation. But the WP way would be to integrate new info to the same quality of grammar and linkage. Or to move it to a daughter page with a note to that effect. JackyR 00:38, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Are you referring to this revert. If so, that seems like an appropriate action. That paragraph was out-of-context and no reason for the importance of the information was given. Plus it was unreferenced, and citing sources is policy. I'm not the one who reverted it though. Tuf-Kat 01:57, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Mime

At the end of the "folk music" paragraph appears this sentence:

"The Ozidi Saga found in the Niger Delta ... utilises; a narrator, a chorus, percussion, mime and dance"

With "mime" directing to Pantomime (theatre), "a theatrical genre, usually performed around the Christmas and New Year holiday". Am I guessing right this should direct to Mime artist, "...someone who uses mime as a theatrical medium"?

I'd fix it, but I'm not familiar with the subject and wouldn't like to damage a great article. Udi Raz 21:04, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Yoruba emphasis
