Reverts

The edits I just reverted are not just of 82.156.71.55 (talk · contribs), who added Pierre van Hooijdonk, Dirk Kuyt and Robin van Persie to the list of famous players, but also of 62.252.128.18 (talk · contribs), who claimed that the Dutch national football team had won the 1930 World Cup. The latter is obviously not true. I also believe that Van Hooijdonk, Kuyt and Van Persie are not yet famous and prominent enough to be included in the Famous Players section. Kuyt has now played 10 matches for the Dutch national team. Van Persie has a promising future, but he has only played 2 matches for the national team. Van Hooijdonk has played 46 matches for the Dutch national team, but most of these were as a substitute. I believe he has started in the starting line-up only 4 times. Province flags

I removed the province flags, because I thought they were very confusing (at first I thought WTF?). Even most Dutch people don't know all the province flags, and I don't think knowing which province a player comes from is all that important. I'm sorry about the work that must've gone in it. Junes 16:21, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Nevermind... =_=' However, is it better with team logos? --necronudist 13:15, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

It hasn't got any purpose to put the flags of the provinces before the name of the player. I suggest that someone deletes them.

I agree, ditch the flags. To show how rediculous this is, I have put the flag of Morocco in front of Bouhlarouz. I think he will have more affinity with that than a stupid province flag!!

Projected Starting Line-Up and Formation

I replaced Johnny Heitinga for Joris Mathijsen, because Mathijsen is way more likely to play in the line-up than Johnny Heitinga. Mathijsen is left-footed and has been playing way more games in the national team lately than Heitinga.

Names

Sorry for my ignorance but could someone point me out the differences between Netherlands and Holland. thks .- (Jor70 16:58, 5 June 2006 (UTC))

Holland is the major region in the Netherlands, but is very often used to mean the Netherlands, so it doesn't really matter. Officially, the nation is called the Netherlands.- KingPenguin 02:49, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Team Uniform

I believe that the home jersey is just a plain orange jersey with the Nike and Holland logos on it. Bluedevil04 2:59, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I was kind of wondering about what the deal with the outfit is. They played in all orange against serbia, yet the official shop shows the blue shorts/blue socks combination. So which is it? jacoplane 20:36, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

The official jersey is Orange, White and blue. The FIFA choised to obligate the team to play in all orange to define the teams better on black and white TV's

I changed the colors slightly to more accurately reflect what I consider the nicest-looking uniform in FIFA...now using Cobalt blue and International orange. David Schroder 14:42, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

The Dutch jersey has a collar, though. FootyStavros 20:44, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

A "collar" is not to be depicted. Otherwise we could put true picture, couldn't we?--Uyet Ustranimii 23:13, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

History

Should this not be further split and expanded ? This is one of the greatest teams, surely some sections entitled something like "Early days" - pre-1950, "Total football" - 1970s, "European Champions" - 1980s/early 90s and "Recent"? Hardrada 19:09, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Strip?

Both strips look wrong to me. They played in all orange against Argentina, and I've never seen that 'away strip'. Can someone fix it please? --Guinnog 18:35, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

That was FIFA's idea, to let them play all orange in the group matches. I am not sure about the forecoming matches though. The orange, white, blue home tenue was made official in february of this year. Intangible 18:43, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Olympic medal table

I think the olympic medal table looks a little out of place on this page (in the "Competitive record" section). There is no other information on the page and I sampled a few other national team pages and no one lists Olympic medals (perhaps because I sampled some that have never won any, but that seems doubtful). Any objections to removing the table? 71.10.182.93 03:33, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Argentina has their medals on their page, though I have no opinion on the medals table. KingPenguin 16:45, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I wouldn't have a problem with its removal. --Guinnog 17:27, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree. Maybe there should be a separate page for the Olympic team. Rbakker99 (talk) 17:49, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Cruijff missing WC78

The reason Cruijff did not play in Argentina was not related to the political situation in Argentina, but instead is believed to be due to him not wanting to be away from his family for long periods. Willem van Hanegem however did chose not to play because of the political situation.--82.41.245.102 12:08, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

I think you are mistaken, see Talk:Johan Cruijff and the reference therein. --Guinnog 12:14, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure that anyone (other than the man himself) really knows the reason, but there are also references that confirm what I stated above (http://fifa-world-cup-soccer-2006.deepthi.com/johan-cruyff.html). It may be more accurate to highlight this as well.--20.133.0.8 09:45, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

World War II reference

I removed that particular info from the EC 1988 section becaaaauuse it was inserted by a user who has trolled this page before. The only reason he edited the Nazi part into the text was to make the football supporters look bad, which means his intent isn't in accordance with WP:NPOV.

Besides, why should the Dutch football supporters from the eighties be singled out for referencing World War II (how childish it may be) - I know the English and The French supporters have done so as well in the past, yet their pages don't reflect any negative behavior. Famous past players

Depending on manager, Davids, Kluivert and Makaay are still available for the national team. As long as players do not retire from international football themselves, it is prematurely to add them to the past players section. Had to remove Seedorf from the list for the same reason. But the evil, evil SportsAddicted re-added the three mentioned players to the past list again. May his dinner be poisoned. Razororz 14:24, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

LOL I'm not that evil my friend ;) The only reason for me to replace them back where they were is because they haven't been in the squad for over a year and are not likely to be called up again. I know Seedorf is now back in the squad and shouldn't be on there, but the others aren't in the squad yet and should be on the list of famous past players as they are no current players. It doesn't say famous retired players, but famous past players. SportsAddicted | discuss 16:06, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Then we have a difference of semantics, mate. In this context, 'past' and 'former' means pretty much the same to me, thus 'past players' indicates that the players retired from the team. Shouldn't Van Nistelrooy be added to the list if we apply your definition of the word? Razororz 19:10, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
former and past players are indeed sort of the same, retired players is different. In my opinion Van Nistelrooy should be in the list as soon as he drops out of the recent call ups section. It's not a big deal to remove a player from the famous past players when called up again, but he may become forgotten as soon as they are no longer part of the squad but not yet retired. SportsAddicted | discuss 19:22, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Fair enough. Razororz 19:25, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

World Cup History

The Dutch have been in 12 world cups and it says they've only been in 8

That's because we've only been in 8 World Cups: 1934, 1938, 1974, 1978, 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2006. Aecis Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984. 22:07, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Licensing

Why is the Dutch football team never feautred in any football video games made after around 2001? Is the Dutch FA really stringent about its licensing laws, or something? Icanhearthegrassgrow 13:49, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I think that they are like that about liscensing- It's the same with Rangers F.C and Arsenal F.C and Man Utd

Hi, my username is limesen, I wrote this in the article "Joao Havelange (former FIFA President from 1974 to 1998) claimed that the 1966 and 1974 World Cups were fixed so that England and Germany would win respectively" but I can't add the source to the references http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=753029 Can someone do it 4 me?

Orange Crush/ teamname

The nicknames for the squad are listed as "Holland", "Oranje" and "Orange Crush". I have never ever heard of that third one before. Can anyone supply a reference? If not, I'll remove it soon. Rbakker99 (talk) 17:47, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Holland vs Netherlands

Right, before I start, let me just say, I KNOW the distinction between the two, so all you non-Hollander Dutch can just calm down and put the daggers away. This page doesn't expressly talk about the difference but seems to make it perfectly clear that this is the national side of the Netherlands rather than Holland. I merely came to check because the Times, of all newspapers, refers to the team as "Holland" in all their World Cup coverage, and of course as an Englishman I know that national football teams don't always represent entire nations. However, from (skim-)reading this article it seems apparent that the UK is a special case and the Netherlands does indeed compete as one entity on the international stage. Perhaps therefore you should send assassins and angry letters in the Times' general direction and maybe mention the fact on this page somewhere, since the distinction seems so important to many Dutch and so confusing to many foreigners? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.176.135.127 (talkcontribs) 12:13, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

The style guide for The Times states: "Holland use the Netherlands (no longer cap The) for all contexts except sports teams, historical uses, or when referring to the provinces of North and South Holland. The adjective is Dutch. See Netherlands". I've added a sentence to the article about the use of Holland as a name for the team. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:19, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't see ^that sentence^ in the article? I too came here (I'm sure this must annoy the hell out of you Dutch peeps continually!) because in the UK, our commercial terrestrial channel, ITV, that broadcast last nights' Euro 2012 game, also insisted on using the term "Holland" all over the main EPG info. I was actually quite annoyed on your behalf! Unless there's some justification, surely The Times (and perhaps other media companies) operate f*cking stupid so-called styles guides then?! Questions... do ALL broadcasters follow The Times' style guide (or similar ones of their own perhaps with the same "Holland" wrongness), and if so, why when it's clearly wrong?? (does someone –eg. an official NL government department or something– in the Netherlands contribute to this misusage by media companies here in the UK and elsewhere?) Jimthing (talk) 16:29, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Current (2010 World Cup) kit

Someone changed the home kit to orange shorts. The current home kit has black shorts as evidenced in the FIFA 2010 World Cup games against Denmark, Japan, Slovakia and Brazil where Netherlands were the home team. Only against Uruguay they wore orange shorts because Uruguay wore black shorts (along with blue shirts) and the kits would've looked similar on a black-and-white television. Please change the home kit back to black shorts. --83.128.20.250 (talk) 00:36, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Wesley Sneijder

{{editrequest}} Wesley Sneijder's semifinal goal against Uruguay has put him in the goalscorers top 10. He has now scored 19 goals in 67 caps, putting him on par with Leen Vente and Robin van Persie. 94.212.31.237 (talk) 14:37, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Best team never to win the World Cup

I have changed the following sentence

The Oranje are generally considered to be the best national football team to have never won the World Cup

to

The Oranje are often described as the best national football team to have never won the World Cup.

I'm a great admirer of the Dutch football team, but I think the above statement was made too strongly. For example, many would consider Hungary (at their peak in 1954) as the best team never to win the World Cup. R Lowry (talk) 10:25, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Netherlands are the first on the FIFA 2011 August rang list

Why isn't that included in the Euro 2012 section? It is a big feet, the first time for Netherlands and it joins the companion of only 6 other nations that managed the same (France, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Italy and Spain). I'm not really a fan of Netherlands, so I don't want to mess up since I think that someone who loves that country would write at least with more attention to details. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnelZukic (talkcontribs) 06:07, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Team nicknames

Can anyone confirm where "Clockwork Orange" and "The Flying Dutchmen" are used as nicknames for the Netherlands? I see Holland and Oranje being used all the time, but never the other two. Although I can see why those nicknames would make sense. Hanonkuro (talk) 03:41, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Clockwork Orange was a popular nickname for the Netherlands in the seventies when Cruyff and co. were dominating world football, as Total Football was introduced to the World, many referred to the team as Clockwork Orange, below is a link from the official website of the Netherlands, explaining the nickname in depth, they are also commonly referred to as La Maquina Naranja in Spanish. The Flying Dutchmen is another nickname that originated in the seventies.
