School's pedigree[edit]

Although I am sure it does much for the current school's prestige, the Newport High School for Boys and Newport High School for Girls have nothing to do with this institution. They were former grammar schools located elsewhere in the city (then town) of Newport. This school's heritage is based entirely on Bettws Comprehensive School, with the new name designed to avoid comparisons with that unsuccessful school.
