Photo[edit]

Hey folks, I was passing through, and noticed that the old photo accompanying this article had been replaced by one of a completely different person, I'm 99% sure the replacement image was of Alice Joyce, take a look at this:

L-R is Norma Talmadge herself, Anna Q Nillson and Alice Joyce. Compare the shapes of the noses particularly. No idea where to find a copyright-free image to use, I figured no picture at all was better than a photo of the wrong person though!

Sunset Blvd?[edit]

I don't understand the claim that the character of Norma Desmond from Sunset Blvd was "inspired" by her since, from her bio, it doesn't sound like she is anything like that character. She didn't live as a recluse in Hollywood, watching her old films, she put that life behind her and moved on. What is the source of this claim? This has now been addressed in the article. It is apparently just the opinion of one Norma Talmadge DVD reviewer, albeit in the New York Times, that Talmadge is "obviously" the model for Desmond; unfortunately, that "fact" is now all over the internet, probably by way of its addition to this and other WP articles. I must have read a score of substantial commentaries on Sunset Boulevard over the past several decades and never encountered such a claim.

The conventional account of Talmadge's demise is that when talkies arrived she played Madame du Barry with a Brooklyn accent and got laughed off the screen, so it can more reasonably be argued that, based on that story, she was the model for the character of Lina Lamont. However, in nearly every other particular Lamont bears little resemblance to Norma Talmadge's personality either on or off the screen, at least as far as I am aware. In the opinion of nearly all writers, both Norma Desmond and Lina Lamont are fictional composite characters, each mirroring aspects of several fallen silent stars but neither simply a disguised portrait of one in particular. 66.81.221.234 (talk) 07:25, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Beta Breuil[edit]

Beta Breuil’s first name was spelled “Breta” in the cited source, but that seems to be an obvious typing error. Her own signature on the photo spells it “Beta,” as does the article from which the picture came (https://archive.org/stream/movinwor14chal#page/n555/mode/1up). Birth Date[edit]

I notice that the birth date has been changed back to May 26, which is unfortunately the date in all the standard reference works, but that date is incorrect. It seems to have been introduced by an error her the LA Times obituary. Reference no. 4 on the page is her birth certificate, which should prove the date is May 2. Also in articles produced during her lifetime, the date is always given as May 2 (though she always gave the wrong year).
