I've separated the terms "Scallywag" (which is the British English pronunciation according to the OED) and "Scalawag" (US English), as they don't mean quite the same thing. In British English the pejorative reference to Southern Unionists is not the primary meaning by a long way, so this page shouldn't suggest that; and "Scallywag" shouldn't redirect there.
